Dealers are flipping boats right now and not feeling particularly generous with cutting deals, i.e. asking price is pretty much selling price. I would wait until the Fall or Winter to get a deal on an end of year model.

When people are rushing to buy new, why not buy lightly used? Seems like the used boat market is flooded.

Worth starting there but for many of us that have owned a few boats, we are at a point where we would be looking for something very specific in a new to us boat. I’ve spent some time on boat trader and not seeing what I want for my next dream boat.

My dealer, though not huge, is out of new inventory and only has 3 used boats for sale. They have been in business almost 50 years can’t remember being out of stock this early before. All new boats sold now have to be ordered. They sell Skeeter, Lund, Sea Ark and I believe still G3. Service department is swamped. Son bought business from mom and dad this year I said “well the timing was right for that”, he just smiled. He should be flush with cash in the next couple of months when it’s time to order next year’s inventory, they have for years paid for boats to maximize discounts, no floor plan for them.

You might save a few bucks waiting until season end and buying a 2020 then. But IMO you won’t save squat waiting until the show season. Builders will adjust accordingly with demand & materials and labor costs.

If you want a new boat grab one now and enjoy the rest of the season. You aren’t going to save 10’s of thousands buying new no matter when you do it.

Agreed. Those who think there are deals just waiting to be had in the off-season are often mistaken. People value toys and the coming generations seem to do so even more. Used boat owners are having no issues moving rigs that are fairly priced. Dealers and manufacturers don’t just blindly head into the off-season without making adjustments based on the market.

If you find what you want for a price that is fair (and you can truthfully afford it, insurance, maintenance, storage, etc), pull the trigger and enjoy it.

Agree. I just bought a new 2020 boat probably from the same place brentbullets is speaking of. If you want or need a boat what is a few hundred dollars difference. I sold my old boat too within a week people want to be outdoors during this crisis. Research and research until you find a good deal and pull the trigger.

I bought my boat the last partt of April during the peak of the Corona worries. At that time I felt I got a good deal. Today’s market presents a much tougher time to get a bargain in my mind especially for a new rig. Current interest rates are around 4.25% so money is fairly cheap if you need a loan.

I don’t know if it’s because of inventory problems or because people are buying more of this stuff this summer, but my local Fleet Farm is pretty much completely out of all kayaks, life jackets, anchors, on and on. Fishing rods gone. Because the place has been packed with people in these departments, I’ve got to think that it’s because of increased sales. I have never seen that place wiped out like that before.

I went with a buddy to look at a new Ranger. I haven’t looked at new boat prices lately. Holy Sh!t, I looked at a Ranger 622FS,107K loaded with a 400HP motor. I’ll be keeping mine for a long time I guess. I felt like I paid too much for my boat when I bought it used. Now I feel like I stole it.

I ended up buying new, Couldn’t find squat that was worth taking home, either beat to trash, or if in very good condition about the same price as new.

I think I’ll see how much I can save between now and February and see what our boat show has to offer. I’m on the fence concerning a new boat so won’t feel pushed to jump at anything if it isn’t a good deal.

IMHO, I think as we head into winter boat storage season, there will be a lot of pandemic-boat buyers asking themselves “Just what did I get myself into with this boat thing, and how can I get out?” A lot of these buyers are likely first-time boat owners and may now feel overwhelmed. Dealers may over-order as well, anticipating more of the same buying levels next year. All this could have a lot of boats available, making pricing more competitive.

I don’t see it. About the only used boats on the market for more than 10 minutes are the boats with E-Tecs. Everything else is getting scooped right up.
