Buy, Buy Buy licenses! Support the future of fishing in MN. While I’m sure the Goan and Grown crowd will weigh in, I’d like you to encourage folks to buy fishing and hunting licenses ( even if you don’t plan to get out). Our MN Fish and Game fund is dependent on license sales. With Covid19 and social distancing, I anticipate fewer folks getting out. Here are just a few of the groups supporting license sales.

    Dear Minnesota Anglers and Hunters:
While there are many uncertainties today, you can count on the start of the Minnesota hunting and fishing seasons. Governor Walz’s stay at home order actually encourages people to get outdoors and engage in activities that include hunting and fishing.
Whether or not you’re planning to hit the water or the woods in the coming weeks, you can still make a positive difference for our fish and wildlife today! If your circumstances allow, we encourage you to buy fishing and hunting licenses and stamps, even if you do not plan to fish or hunt.
Not everyone realizes the management of fish and wildlife by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Fish and Wildlife, is paid for by hunters and anglers. This is done through the sale of fishing, hunting and related licenses and stamps, as well as federal excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment purchases. This vital work is funded by anglers and hunters. It is not funded by property or general income taxes.
We in the hunting and angling community have a long history of stepping up during times of adversity to promote fish and wildlife management and conservation. Some of the best programs operating today were created in the shadow of the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Many retail locations that sell licenses remain open, and we encourage you to support them. If you’d prefer not to go out, you can also purchase these from home. Visit the DNR webpage, http://www.mndnr.gov or call the DNR at 888-665-4236.
We hope you are able to get outside and enjoy the activities you love. If you do so, please stay close to home and follow the social distancing guidelines set forth by Governor Walz. Most of all, stay safe.
    Thank you.

No doom & gloom here. I will buy a fishing license as I always do. Maybe trimming some of the fat out of the DNR would be a good thing?

Sadly it probably won’t change anything in staffing and waste but wildlife management and habitat projects will probably take the hit.

I’ve got my fishing license and trout stamp every year on March 1st. I don’t think the members of this site are really the target audience for the initiative. Can’t imagine anyone here declining to buy but I’ve been wrong before.

The problem here is that too much of the DNR’s budget is tied to license sales so when they see participation drop, they raise the cost to make up for the losses. They’re worried about their salaries and benefits.

Already bought my angling and spring turkey license anyways.

Minnesota has some extremely rare and valuable resoruces related to the outdoors. It’s time the out of state licenses see an increase (and that increase is tied directly to stocking and enforcement efforts). Those coming here from different states with their tow rigs, boats, planning expensive stays are not going to change their habits over a few dollars.

I saw on the Wisconsin state surveys last week that they are looking at a substantial jump in out of state hunting license fees.

A agree! How much are the Dakotas charging us to go there and duck or pheasant hunt? Way too much, plus they limit the amount of time we can go there and do it. Its time to turn the tables on our neighboring states.

I renewed my lifetime Sportsmans license before the LOW trip in the first week of March. Only ~7 years to go before I break even.

I have fallen into the habit of buying my deer license at the fair – if I buy it this early is the doe lottery stuff already sorted out or would I need to remeber to do something later on? I was under the impression lottery zones were decided later on in the year.

Already got the Combo Sportsmens (50/50 on if the wife actually uses it, but none the less…), a walleye stamp and submitted for bear lottery. Still likely buying a trout stamp, Bow and Rifle Deer, Pheasant and maybe even Duck Stamps…add in trips to Home Depot and Bed Bath and beyond, I’m just not sure if I’ll have enough time rotflol

I don’t really care what they do with the non-resident license. Raise it, lower it, keep it the same doesn’t matter.

I would like to see ANY INCREASES in any license dedicated rather then going into the general abyss where money gets burned up like it’s being printed. We really need more and better enforcement. There are to many people abusing the system and getting away with it. More enforcement please.

Be careful for what you wish for. We are at a time that none of us ever imagined…unless we learned/recognized history.

I doubt anyone watched the PBS show last night on the Pandemic of 1918, I did and read more about it this morning.

An enlightening if not actually more shocking how it forecasted and predicted what we are experiencing now.

As far as “enforcement”? One could not imagine back then or now how that can twist. How that can sneak in? Are we not really paying attention? What did they think back in 1938 Germany?

These events have happened before, and they can and may very will happen again. ???

And i hope Wisconsin raises it to meet the western states fees.

By the way, i bought my MN, out of state, husband and wife license with trout. Happy to pay that price i was charged. That’s cheap.

Couldn’t agree more.. SD, ND, IA, and WI all gouge MN residents when it comes to non-resident fishing/hunting licenses. Time to start bending them over and returning the favor.
