Hey guys, I walleye fish a lake near Brainerd and have caught a couple accidental eelpout while walleye fishing over the years. Now I would like to try to actually target them and am looking for a few pointers to start my search (baits, depths, structure, etc.). Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Fish them anywhere you would fish walleye only keep the bait within 6″ of the bottom. Nite time is the best, I mean late night, not just at sunset. back in the day we would have pout contests between a few houses once prime time for walleyes ended. About the time you turn out the lights for the night the rattle reels go off and all thru the night. Jig and a minnow 6″ or less off the bottom, or you can jig for them and rap the bottom a lot with the jigging spoon. Pink was always the best color for pout for us for whatever reason.

At night, close to the bottom, with a big ‘ol spoon with a big wad of bait on the treble. You can use just about anything from minnows, to night crawlers, to euro larvae. I’ve heard nightcrawlers work very well, but may be hard to find this time of year.

They spawn much earlier than anything else, and it could be going as we speak. So, looking for some gravel might help locate some fish. I’ve heard of people finding big balls of dozens to hundreds fish getting it on.
