Anybody built a wooden muskie box? My son asked me to make him one so I’m looking for suggestions on layout, size, materials, etc. I’ve attached pictures of a box he saw, but not sure I’m happy with the layout, build, etc.

    Thanks

Have you ever seen the wooden boxes they had for deposit bottles of pop? They would work.

This is what I made for trolling spoons and bigger trolling plugs. I used an ammo can I had left over.

Does he have his own boat? I would make one that fits in the area he will be having it if he does. I would make it wide enough to fit 3700 size boxes in it (future options and works well for smaller baits) and use 1/8 hardboard for dividers. Cut in some dados to make the panels adjustable. You might not want to make it too big because of how heavy it could get. 2 smaller ones would be easer to get in and out of the boat over one larger one. Please share pictures when you are done.

If going for aesthetics, you can pretty readily find old wooden ammo boxes at antique shops, auctions, etc. Then add the grid to the inside, like the pic above.

He bought a TYEE GL 186 so will work with him on size of the box, I agree that 2 narrow boxes would be better than one large box. Have a 4 x 4 sheet of lexan I will use for dividers- thinking a sleeve inside holes drilled in the outside walls would be a good add as well.

    Thanks

Not sure making one out of wood will be a good idea. It will be tough to keep the weight down. Out of all the guys I’ve muskie fished with or seen out muskie fishing, I don’t believe I have ever seen anyone with a home made wooden muskie box. If you added wooden dividers down the middle of the example you have, to make the most use of the inner space, that will get pretty heavy before you put in your baits. And this still doesn’t have a cover on it. If you don’t want a cover, I would be concerned about water/rain getting in it. Even the Just Encase boxes made from plastic get heavier than heck. Now if it is a custom box made from wood that stays in the boat and could be used as a casting deck extention, that would be cool.

I use this to store a few collectibles.
Slots cut in sides for lexan dividers.

    Michael,
That is an awesome looking box. I could see having something like that in the man cave. Do you take it fishing in the boat with you? That looks too nice to get beat up in the boat.

I used a plastic tote from Plano, can’t remember the size, then purchased vinyl downspout 10′ section and cut to size. Glued them together, works great, and light.
