Took my son out on Monday night for some fast bobber action, and what was with all the bugs? My god we had to wrap towels around our heads to keep sane. My trolling motor was covered in these little wood tick looking bugs along with some May fly looking things. Anyone else have as much fun dealing with these this weekend?
Was suppressed to see all the landings full of rigs on our way home last night also.

Those were the infamous fishflies (midges). Yes, anyone of us that has spent enough time up there will have had experience dealing with the swarms. This is something that is rarely mentioned by local business interests because of the negative effect on tourism.

They can get so thick, some people won’t even go out.

These hatches occur every year late May early June, sometimes 2 or 3 times throughout the summer. I did see a mayfly or two mixed in this past weekend, but they have their own peak hatch later.

Speaking of fish flies. I remember back when I was maybe 15 we were by the Wharf’s fish cleaning shack when a drunk guy went in and started eating all the left over walleye cheeks raw. They were covered in fish flies. I’ve never seen so much puke in my life. rotflol
