    How does this even happen

Could be a number of reasons but it is highly likely that cost cutting in design is the root cause.

Crazy right, except the break happened on the wrong side of the chains! The house flipped over.

That looks like 2×2 tubing depending on size of fish house the tubing could be under sized.

Kind of looks like there was a hole drilled right where it broke.
Holes cause stress points and weak spots.

Yes homemade, lighter then any fish Ouse out there! More then trustworthy in the father who made it. This baby has 20+ years age in it. I can’t imagine there was anything cost saving about it! Everyone is safe, he was on his way to pick up his nephews for a weekend on the ice.

The way it broke it looks like it was made of that powdered metal material.

Looks like a carbon steel weld that was quenched- made it brittle.

More reason to check your equipment regularly. That crack likely has been there for a few trips.

Or perhaps it was welded too cold, didn’t get enough penetration on the weld that broke.

That’s one area I wouldn’t try saving weight, 2×2 just seems small to me. But it did last 20 years. How big was the house?

Was it a weld that broke, or the did the tongue itself break? Just glad no one is hurt. this will be interesting to follow and diagnose what failed

    Thanks

Yikes that does not look like any fun at all!! Looks like he has the same system to raise and lower the house that I have on mine. That cylinder on the side of the hitch with the holes in is what you slide a jack into and then put a pin through the hole attaches the jack to the tongue. Raise and lower it with a drill. Same thing next to each wheel. Kind of funky but it works and I like mine a lot.

I’m surprised to see another one as I have never seen a set up like that until I bought mine last year. Could have it been made by the same guy? Or maybe there’s more of them out there than I know I just need to get out more! smile

That’s scary as hell. Glad nobody got hurt. That is my worst fear when towing anything, especially that it snapped after the safety chains.
