Brushy Creek Labor Day Weekend

Hot day Saturday. Fishing was good though. Big dinner plate sized gills, a few bass, several male walleyes and a few crappies. Gills are stacked up when you find them, had to move a lot to find a few pods. Walleyes are acting like those post spawn males do and they are hungry. Bass seemed to mostly be on the spawn or else highly educated. Just a few reaction bites by bass that hadn’t seen a boat in awhile. Crappies are present but weren’t on a tear by any means. Had a fun day, but it would have been nice to be comfortable.

Taking my 8 yr old son down there on thursday and have never fished it. Any tips on the walleyes? I was planning on casting huskys and smaller cranks as he loves to cast. Thanks, Mike

A kid casting a multi hook bait around Brushy. That’s a funny picture. Trees and wood everywhere. You better buy some Rapala stock before you go. I suppose you could do that up by the dam or off one of the rocky points without too much trouble. I don’t know how effective that would be though. Brushy is pretty clear so I doubt there is much of a crankbait bite during the day, maybe at night I don’t know. With a kid I’d try a slip bobber and a leech. Make sure you get it down where they can see it from the bottom.

Personally, I’d go for the gills. Big fat gills that bite fast and furious. Crappies might be up near shore by then too. Keep in mind that 10 feet from shore at Brushy could mean 25 feet of water. It ain’t like no place else I’ve ever fished. I don’t claim to be an expert, just a student. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice…I’ve never fished it so I’ll be a rookie tomorrow if we go. We may take the boat up to Clear Lake instead, its up to him what he wants to do…school’s out!!!

Go to Brushy. The yellows are done at Clear.
