Howdy,
I’m going to fish the Bois Brule this Fall and would like to be sure that I’m properly licensed to do so. Besides a non-resident Wisconsin fishing license, do I need a “Inland Trout Stamp” or a “Great Lakes Salmon/Trout Stamp” ?
Thanks!

The great lakes trout/salmon is obviously the lake, but up the tributary to the first dam. Bois Brule River

You only need the inland Trout for inland streams and Lake Superior Tributaries. The Great Lakes stamp is for Lake Michigan and its tributaries upto their posted upstream barrier. Above that you need the inland trout stamp also. The Great Lakes stamp pays for salmon and steelhead stocking. WI does not stock Lake Superior Tribs or the Lake with Salmon therefor you do not need the stamp.
Mwal
mwal provided great insight to a regulation that I was not aware of… So looking it up in the State fishing regs says something a bit different and in the Trout regs it states it jsut as mwal does, so it seems to be as clear as mud…
From the Trout Regulations booklet:
Trout Fishing Restrictions – It is illegal…
• to fish without a Wisconsin fishing license or stamp as required. You must have an inland trout stamp if you need a fishing license and intend to fish for trout in inland waters, including streams flowing into Lake Superior. You need a Great Lakes trout and salmon stamp to fish for trout and salmon in streams that flow into Green Bay and Lake Michigan from their mouths up to the first dam or lake (including specific waters listed above). A 2-day resident inland lake trout license may be purchased to fish for all species of trout in inland lakes (no stamp required).
From the Fishing Regulations:
Annual inland trout stamp privilege (residents and nonresidents)— See
the Guide to Wisconsin Trout Fishing Regulations, 2015-2016 for license
restrictions. Required in addition to your fishing license to fish trout on
tributaries to Lake Superior and all inland waters, except Green Bay and
Lake Michigan tributaries up to the first dam or lake. $10.00
Annual Great Lakes trout and salmon stamp privilege (residents and
nonresidents)— Required in addition to your fishing license to fish trout or
salmon on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Green Bay and the tributaries of
Lake Michigan and Green Bay up to the first dam or lake. $10.00
Two-day sports fishing license for residents and nonresidents—This license
entitles a resident or nonresident to fish the outlying waters of Lake
Superior, Lake Michigan, and Green Bay, as well as Lake Michigan and
Green Bay tributaries upstream to the first dam or lake. License includes
the Great Lakes Trout and Salmon stamp privilege. $14.00
There ya have it…

OK, it looks like the Salmon/Trout stamp applies to Lake Michigan tributaries and the Inland Trout stamp is required for Lake Superior Tributaries.
I think
Steve, call the field office for that region. When I brought a group up there, they were required to gave the great Lakes stamp below the dam to the lake. Don’t trust our opinions

Good idea.

A superb idea!!! I was trying to show how the regs were clear as mud, but didn’t finish very well… My bad. From reading the two sets of regs, I could see where mwal was coming from as well as Randy… That’s not good…
