We made our first trip to the Brule this week. I’ve been around long enough to realize you usually don’t walk into a new situation cold and do really well. We spent a lot of time driving and walking and just looking at the river until we found some decent looking holes to try. There hasn’t been any significant rain in the area for almost two weeks so the river is very low and clear. This all makes for tough fishing conditions. The fish wait for a surge of rainwater coming into the lake before the run into the river, and the ones that are in the river are spooky because of the low water. Reports weren’t great. The guy at the bait store in Superior said he’d been on the river seven times in a row without seeing any action. We talked to quite a few other anglers and they weren’t reporting much success either. We started off fishing pocket water and any deeper pools we could find. The pocket water produced some smaller resident fish, both Rainbows and Browns. Tuesday morning we did find one Steelhead in a cooperative mood that took a big Hex nymph. Whoever coined the phrase “Trout live in pretty places” must have been fishing the Brule. The scenery was so beautiful it was distracting at times! A fun trip and i can’t wait to get back up there. Hopefully after some rain.

True. Almost every license plate I saw was from Minnesota.
October 7, 2015 at 9:35 pm #1569514The best days to fish are in the rain (unless blown out). It helps keep the Duluth crowd down because they can pick and choose the days they want to fish.
October 7, 2015 at 9:50 pm #1569516Great report Rootski…I am glad you were able to find at least some fish. You are right, that is a very pretty hole you hooked that fish in.
October 7, 2015 at 10:49 pm #1569519That hole has some familiar elements. Could there be a structure of Finnish heritage in the vicinity?

I think so…Pretty sure I know exactly where that is. Last time we fished the Brule I think you hooked 3 fish out of that hole in pretty short order Tegg.
October 7, 2015 at 11:48 pm #1569522Hex Nymph nice tie. Also try a Teeny Nymph this time of the year easy tie and a very good fisher. Good job and learn it more each time then you will have something. Also try the north shore rivers all the way from Duluth to Grand portage or Grand Maris. To bad our season never last as long. Also it seems funny but egg patterns can be hot this time of the year.

The smaller resident fish we caught hit egg patterns, so I kept trying them as well as the nymphs. BTW I found a way to make eggs using a piece of drinking straw to hold the yarn, it works really well!
The North Shore streams are a tough proposition from here. The few fish that do show up don’t stay in the river very long. Timing a trip is about impossible to do right. Other than the Pinks, it’s not worth the trip from here.

October 19, 2015 at 8:59 pm #1572033Yah I know people use straws to tie eggs and make them quick, but I find tying egg patterns is boring so I usually tie over easy eggs or egg sucking leaches so I just tie regular egg patters when I need them. How ever my favorite “egg pattern” is my wooly egg. Its like if a wooly bugger and an egg had a baby. It hauls in the big ones especially in the spring after they see all the other eggs that look the same.
