Are there any custom rod-builders that could turn a broken open-water spinning rod of mine into a ice fishing rod for walleye?

It’s an undamaged 5′ long top section of a premium $350 bass fishing rod, a Dobyns Champion Extreme 792sf. It was crushed by a rod locker just above the handle. I am not a smart man.

I’d like to have a cork handle built on the existing blank to make it into a 36″ long walleye rod. The action would be great for that. It has a nice soft tip and a stiff backbone.

I’m in St. Cloud. Would be willing to ship, but would prefer local or Twin Cities.

    Thanks, Joe

I bet John at TUCR would do it.

    Perhaps Trumar or Randy Wieland.

I can handle that for you, the only problem would be where the guides are on the area where you want to put the handle and you would have to add a stripper guide. So you would maybe have to remove a guide or 2 and add a new one with the handle.

Depending on how much of the blank was crushed, an option would be to have an experienced rod builder look at it to see if it can be repaired. With a good repair the rod will fish like it did originally.

Bassn Dan has a good point. A break just above the handle is the easiest to repair and will cause very little (if any) effect on the action of the rod. If the damaged area is mostly intact it is not a hard repair for an experienced rod builder.
