Broadhead Tuning

Tried a new Broadhead this year. They are 100 grain fixed blade. It’s a 100 grain two blade with small bleeder blades on the sides. Everything is shooting 6 inches left. I pull back about 70 pounds. Should I bump up to 125 or 150 grain. Not sure if the broadhead is too light or if I’m having other issues.

Just to compare, I shot my old 100 grain expandables. They were also shooting about 4 inches left. I’ve haven’t shot a deer with this bow yet and don’t remember how much broadhead practice I’ve done the last few years. Might have been off and was used to my old bow and never tried broadheads out of this one.

I kind of feel like just adjusting my sights for the broadhead and dealing with the difference between field tips and broadheads later. Lol.

The QAD’s I shot last year had a similar issue, and I just adjusted the sight. I got a deal on some Slick Tricks over the summer, and they’ve been shooting great all the way out to 60 yards. Zero difference from my field points.

How many grains are they and what is your draw weight?

Your bow is out of tune, bring it to a shop to have them get it paper tuned and it should make the fp and bh hit closer. I had issues this year with bh hitting 10 inches from the fp, once the bow got tuned properly they were dead on the same.

Have you shot it through paper? That’s the first step. What’s your draw length? Arrow spine? Arrow length?

I have not shot paper. I don’t remember what my draw length is. I’m 6-1 for reference. Shooting 350 spine arrows and they are 28.5” long.

I think you are under spined. I shoot (#70 pounds and a 29”draw and either shot 300 or 250 spine arrows

I’m pulling 69lbs and shooting 125 grain broadheads with 50 grain outserts.

You’re underspined. I’d get 300 spine arrows first. The bow still may be out of tune, but one thing at a time.

You likely are under spined, but I would try moving your rest first (tuning). How far away are you shooting with your broadheads hitting 6 inches left? My guess is that you would move your rest to the left about 1/32″ at a time, and recheck to bring your groups together, and then adjust your sight. If that doesn’t work, try moving the rest the opposite way. If that doesn’t work, then you may need some more help.

The 6 inches left was at 20. That’s honestly my farthest shot. I’m going to adjust my sight today and see how it shoots at different distances. I’ll call Archery Country tomorrow and talk with them.

If you are a right handed shooter, and broadheads are left, move your rest in about a 32nd to a 1/16″. You may need to reset your sights somewhat after, but if your bow is in tune, you shouldn’t be over an inch difference at 20 yds. If you can’t get any closer than that, then it’s your arrow spine, or release, or both. If you are 6″ off at twenty yards, you have major tuning or shooting issues. 2″ difference, not enough to worry about, just reset sights.

Yeah, 6 inches at 20 is a lot. And musky Ed is correct on the direction to move your rest, but I’ve often found that the opposite is sometimes what is needed. I think you need to start with paper tuning field points, then go to the broadheads.

My issue is that with field points, I can shoot groups out to 50 where the arrows are touching. I then grab a Broadhead arrow and it hits 6 inches left. Sounds like a trip to Archery Country is in store.

Just an update. I stopped at Archery Country in Waite Park. Always amazing customer service. Of course, my broadhead arrows and field tip arrows were touching.🤦‍♂️ There was some wind when I was shooting. Maybe I didn’t factor that enough. He shot it through paper and was impressed with his clean it was.

If you look at most arrow spine charts you are still under spinned with the 350 you are shooting

Does that mean they are not stiff enough?

That’s what it means, but if you got them to tune and group well, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I would be willing to bet that a bare shaft (non-fletched w/field point) would shoot to the same POI as your broadheads at 20 yards. If you got a clean (fletched) tear through paper then your not significantly under-spined. Try MICRO (I’m stressing MICRO) adjustments to your rest to the RIGHT. This should “push” your BH towards your field tip, without drastically affecting your center-shot.

Paper tune it first, Then adjust sights. Otherwise it’s a rabbit hole you’ll never come out of.

Google broadhead tuning. You can tune your field points and broadheads to hit the same point. It is really easy to do once you understand the process.

scroll down till you hit the chart.

Not going to far down the rabbit hole you are micro tuning with this process so you need to move as small of increments as possible
