Breaking up is hard to do…

Had a rather interesting day today. I resigned after 18 years at my company. At least for me, this hasn’t been an easy one. As some may have guessed, I’m in marketing and I’ve felt for some time that it was time to explore other opportunities and finally one

Since I’ve been looking for new gigs, I kind of assumed that others at work would “see it coming”, but basically I just had a day of shocked looks and “holy freaking ####…” responses. Hmmm. This isn’t getting any easier…

I suppose this is the way it always goes, I’ve just been here a long time. Always tough to tell people you’re moving on.

Not exactly. I’m moving a whopping 6 blocks up the street in Minneapolis to become Director of Customer Success with a mobile software startup.

To say it’s an interesting change would be an understatement. Without stereotyping, let me just say that the stereotype of a young software company is…well…pretty much not a stereotype because it’s true. There are probably only 3 of us in the whole company who remember the Reagan administration. And by that, I mean who were even born during the Reagan administration…

Despite the fact that this is going to be great for me, it’s hard to leave the old gang behind. I guess I was hoping it wasn’t going to come as much of a surprise as it did.

    Congrats on the move.

The old job will either say……jeez, how do we replace him? or What did he do around here for 18 years? grin

The new job after 2 months will say……How did we ever land this guy? woot or, we are paying him HOW MUCH???? grin

You likely will wonder what took you so long to make the move. Whatever you do don’t let remorse get ahold of you for at least 6 months.

Good luck in your new job.

Just wrapped up a commercial job for office space in St.Paul where the owners again, seemed quite young. Surprised to see them first few meetings, maybe it’s just me getting old too. Believe they were a marketing firm as well.

The advertising company who had the 2nd level had a rec room, lounge, and wet bar, and yes stocked with liquor. How’s your office setup on the other side of river?

    Congratulations Grouse!
The bigger the challenge the greater the reward. It’s easy to stay where it’s comfortable and do the same old same old. New is rejuvenating, exciting, scary and healthy.

My company went through a major AOR RFP process recently with major MN agencies…. it’s an interesting world out there; lots of creative talent specializing in technologies I’ll never understand.

    Enjoy the new gig!

After retiring from working for the same company for 47 years I admire your courage to make a change. I had offers but just couldn’t make the jump. I do believe a change in your career path can help keep you from falling into a rut.
    Good luck with your future.
