I am headed up to crosslake and the whitefish chain this weekend. Wondering if anyone knew of anything hitting. I’m taking my pregnant wife with and would like to get her into a few fish. Doesn’t really matter what they are. Just get her pole bending. Thanks in advance. G RAFF

Whitefish Chain

There’s always bass and pike willing to bite on that chain o’ lakes. Walleyes on the other hand can be tough at times. Look for the bass and northerns on the deep weed edges around points. There’s also a nice trolling run on the North shore of Lower Whitefish along both sides of the inlet into Trout. ( caught some very nice pike along there trolling large crankbaits) Walleyes are usually on the rockpiles and humps in the evening and can be caught slip bobbering chubs and shiners. If you’d like a little more info on some specific locations feel free to PM.
Good Luck!August 31, 2010 at 7:03 pm #896743Bass – Outside weedline – 17ft – jig worm
Pike in the weeds – Flashy and fast
Walleye over the open basins – 60-80 feet Cross, Upper and Lower and Trout – Troll Down to the thermocline – 38-40 feet
Pannies – nothing to report
Enjoy

August 31, 2010 at 9:21 pm #896765If I want to take people and catch some fish, I always go for a white spinner bait, or fire tiger jointed rap (#5) and troll around the weed areas, we are on the lower end of Crosslake our bay is’t too deep something like 12′ max, more pike than y can shake a stick at for action, very few big ones caught in our area, but the action nearing sunset is absolutely Non stop. This is what I do when I just want to go catch some fish.
Grouse I’d be real interesting in what you’re doing to catch fish on Crosslake in the deep water areas, I’ve tried a few times, with nothing to show for my efforts, I have not doubt they are there and can be caught, not quite figuring out the lures and running depth trolling at night.

I have been experimenting over the past few years – I grew up on the lake and have had some interesting mid-summer action over schools of baitfish.
Mid Lake!!!!!! Sunset!!!!!!
I did some research – wrote some people that might know something about the area and have been fine tunning the tactic.
It is like trollig for trout or salmon. Need to get down to the bait!
Fish bite all day. Big Pike and Eyes.
Eating ciscos, whitefish and smelt.

September 1, 2010 at 12:29 pm #896840We vacation up to that area once per year so I don’t get out there too much, but I’ve done pretty well on the smaller lakes connected to Whitefish for Bass. On Middle Whitefish just before Upper on the south side of the lake is Bertha Lake. Try the south end of the lake…there is nice structure and a nice deep weedline to find….jig worms or texas rigged worms worked well here. Also on Bertha the NW corner of the lake I did well throwing a medium running crankbait into the shallow and running it into the deep over the weedline. Get a crank that will run just over the top of the weeds – caught a bunch of bass and a few small northerns doing this. Rutger’s Bay is another small lake on the south side of Middle Whitefish and has good weedlines on the entire south and east sides of the lake…same tactics here. These are also nice to fish because they are a bit smaller and easier to control the boat if there is any wind. Have fun, beautiful country up there!
