Braided Line Twist with Fluro Leader

I have been having issues with line twist on my jigging rods. I had been doing straight braid to fluro but switched to braid to a small swivel to my fluro leader. Figured that would help with the twist but I still seem to have the same issues. Anyone have any tips on eliminating this issue?

I run 6lb braided Spider Wire directly to a barrel swivel with a quick clip no fluro. Not a problem with twist.

What brand of Braid are you using? I fished braid to a fluro leader most all of the last 2 season on my bass jigworm rod – No problem with line twist at all. Do you mostly fish lakes or rivers? I could see it possibly being a issue when fishing rivers in the current.

Curious how many use a swivel between the braid and the fluro? I know of a few people who do this. I tried it for a short time. I just didn’t like it at all. I think even a small swivel has a impact on the jig action. I also found the knot seemed to get nicked up a lot at the swivel.

If you have a lure that is perpendicular to the line and you drop it down twist will happen no matter what, the farther you drop the more it happens. Stuff might help, line, swivels but twist will still happen. The inline reel makers tried to imply that that kind of reel would eliminate twist, but they do not and now you can buy those reels at a great discount! Anything that falls falls in a spiral, spirals create twist-IMHO

Sorry – I did not see this post was in the Ice-fishing forum. I was thinking jig fishing in the summer months

Are you talking about the actual line twisting into a mess or just your jig slowly rotating when it’s sitting still?

The only way to really help prevent your jig from rotating when still (some), is to use an inline reel. It’s not cure, but it does make a difference.

Spinning reels inherently spin the line some when they rotate. Just the nature of the beast.

If you’re actually twisting your line up into a mess, check your roller bearing on the bail. It might be seized or frozen up.

Also, an actual ball bearing swivel (versus a standard barrel swivel) will spin out lure/line twist MUCH easier.

This seems like it would make sense. I guess it just seemed a bit excessive on all my rods, didn’t seem to matter what type of lure, spoons, jigging raps, ect.
and I do have dedicated rods for each.

Using good quality ball bearing swivels to eliminate line twist has always worked for me when joining braid to fluoro exactly like the scenario you describe. What test fluoro are you using?

Yea, the common theme here is the cheap barrel swivel, which is exactly what I have tied on. I am going to buy some better ones and try that. Definitely cannot hurt to try. Thanks for the replies!

Line twist on a spinning reel is a given. There’s nothing one can do because that’s the nature of the spinning reel. Other than that, it’s lure type and user induced spinning while jigging.

One can reduce jig spinning and line twist by using lures that have large fluke tails that keeps the lure from twisting.

Over all I still prefer a bait casting reel over that of a spinning reel when it comes to reducing line twist.
