Braided / Floro for ice fishing

    Hi guys,

I’m setting up a few walleye ice rods for an upcoming Lake Of The Woods trip.

For summer jigging, my favorite is 10 or 15 lb Suffix 832 Advanced braid. I use the Seagar Blue label floro as a leader. Can use these same lines in the winter?

    Thoughts? Thanks very much.

First time last year I tried an “ice” braid and had problems with it freezing…ice collecting on it to the point I had to bust it off just to reel the line through the tip of the rod. Sure, it was cold but then it’s going to be most times ice fishing even in a fish house.

Perhaps other’s have had different experience but I’m going back to mono line this year.

I’ve only used mono for ice fishing also. This will be new for me. But I made the switch to braid/floro leader for summer fishing a couple years ago. I love it. So I’d like to try it for my trip. We will be in a warm shack, so it freezing should not be an issue. (I don’t think). I have a couple in-line reels. Maybe I should use those with pure floro? Thanks for your input Andy. Very appreciated.

The answer depends on whether you hole hop outside or tend to fish in a heated shack or portable. In a heated shack, no problem with 832. Outside in low temps, my experience is that 832 tends to ice up more than other options.

I use Suffix 832 year round, with flouro or mono leaders on a swivel, but I use 6 or 8 lbs. Also keep mono on one rod for hole hopping outside.

Braid works fine down to about 20 degrees, have rods with monofilament or flourocarbon if there’s a chance of fishing outside. Don’t use nanofil, any ice on your line, it will fray and break. Might be fine in the summer but I will never trust that garbage again. I use p-line flouroice for all of my outdoor rods. I like having the option for 5 # perch rods and 7 # walleye rods for some presentations.

Hey guys, I am almost always in a heated shack or heated hub shelter. I do hole hop when the bite is slow, but will take a rod/inline reel with floro on it for that.
    Thanks for the input.

Yep on my bait casting reels I’ve got braids and they go ice fishing the same, 99% in heated shack.

If you have not tried the FG knot to connect Braid to mono or Fluro you need to. It’s a bit hard to tie at first but after a few attempts it gets much easier. It’s not only crazy strong but by far the smoothest knot going threw the eyes. You hardly even notice the knot when it goes threw the tip eye.

I use Asso line. Use it real shallow for panfish or 80′ for other species of fish. 3#. I’ve never had an issue of this line fraying on the hole. I’ve only used it ice fishing.
