I only care who comes from the North. It’ll be fun when they get going.

I agree, more enjoyable when a northern team or two are competitive. Moorhead looks to be a contender this year if they make it past Bemidji.

Rock Ridge looked pretty darn good the other day. Doesn’t hurt to have a Stanley Cup champion for a coach either.

    Who’s gonna dethrone the Hornets?

Wayzata may be the biggest obstacle there. In the same section too.

Just a shout out to the girls state tournament teams. I went to both Championship games and they were THRILLERS. Both Championship games went to OT. Fantastic hockey being played by our MN girls teams.

On a side note, what happened to Duluth East over the last few years? They used to always be a power house..

Thursday of the tourney is the best day of the year. Get to afternoon games, table reserved for maybe year 25 in between sessions then back for the night. That Friday morning is a long one at work but worth it. Then back to games Friday night. We leave for Devils lake Saturday morning so I have to get my god son tickets for Saturday 3rd and chip game.

I have to check again I think our tickets have been in the family since 67 or something like that. The first year they could be transferred I put in my name. I know my grandfather stopped for a couple years then picked them back up in 67. What a great time of the year.

It is pretty wide open and should be great Tournament. Moorhead would be the favorites, but very close is Hill, St. Thomas/Cretin, Rogers.

Randolph has his new team in the championship game. He completely turned around a struggling program. The guy can clearly coach.

It was a joke but a funny one.

    Where did Randolph go?

He coaches at Northern Lakes (sect 6A).

To AK guy, he inherited a Team that has seen it youth program dominate District 15, for years.
The varsity team made the state tournament a few years ago. It was not a struggling team, it is a team that could be good for years to come.

Randolph is a great coach, and he certainly has his kids at Northern Lakes buying in on his style. He has done a great job.

My wife graduated from Hibbing in ‘95. Even though she knows nothing about hockey she still follows the boys and girls teams. The MN HS hockey tournaments are like nothing else in the country.

I’m guessing High School Football in Texas generates the same excitement.

I always wonder would we embrace the tournament the same way if they wouldn’t have split into classes? Seems the underdog coming from up North always gets a little extra attention. grin

You would rarely have any teams from A making the Tournament. Probably only out of section 8. Maybe occasionally section 7. It’s not a knock.

There are so many more good programs and teams than back in the day. Cities have evolved and suburbs have grown. It’s a good thing for hockey.

Take Roger’s for instance. They didn’t even have a program when it was 1 tier and now they have a chance to win the AA. Same thing with Chanhassen last year.

Probably. I think the fact there are only 2 classes makes this unique. There are six classes with subdivisions in TX so you don’t get a statewide following. Regardless, it would be fun to experience a HS game in Texas.

The burbs have taken over AA and it’s not turning back. Enjoy the A tournament for what it is. Look at Andover… wasn’t even a school in the 90s and now they’re perennial state contenders out of one of two “Northern” sections. They were in my section in high school, but we never played them because they were in the play in game every year. And I remember having no clue whatsoever where Andover was. 15 years later they’re double state champs in boys and girls.

Struggling was the wrong word. I probably should have said that the coach with the most victories in high school hockey history has elevated the Northern Lakes program. I hope they make it to state and hang a banner in the Breezy Point arena and the Hallet Center in Crosby.

It’s funny you mention Andover. I was there little over a week ago for a district squirt tournament. It was held at the community center, they had 2 rinks, pool and who knows what all else under one roof. I recall thinking I wonder what this buiding costs. One thing about hockey…the associations will spend whatever they need to too try and compete.

    New York – 109

    Illinois – 54

    New Jersey – 52

    Pennsylvania – 48

    California – 47

    Connecticut – 42

    Wisconsin – 38

I was at the 7aa games on Saturday too. Great games. It would be sweet to see RR at the X. Andover is going to be tough for them though.
