Well, the crappies have made them selves known for years on Bowstring and there at it again this early ice season. The best numbers are coming from the North end mud in that 20-24 feet of water. Ice conditions continue to improve in Northern Minnesota, as Bowstring is showing 6-8 inches of good ice. Some of the smaller snow-covered lakes are not safe yet as one that we checked had less then an inch of ice.
The best bite for these crappies, is early and late in the day. A number of presentation are working, but its tough to argue with the Glow Jiggle Bugs or Doodle bugs by Northland and tipped with either a minnow or waxworm.

I fished Bowstring on Sat the 20th got 6 crappies in first 40 mins then it shut down. a few northerns after that. Talked with locals who said the crappie bite had been fantastic up until sat. Seems as if the crappie numbers have been way up over the past year as I did real well on them in the fall. Not much action on the walleye trail any info on that?

The walleyes have been hit or miss, but this last summer through fall the numbers for waleyes were much better then the last few years. Most of the area lakes are showing the success of a stocking effort that has occurred over the last few springs, which by the sounds of things is going to continue, making for the future of fishing in the area excellent.
as you heard the crappie fishing has been consistently good and it should remain pretty good as there are a few nice classes of crappies in the lake now. The Red Lake crappie fishing has really taken the pressure of most of the area lakes, with the lack of pressure the numbers and size of crappies around the area is nearly as good as it gets. Thanks for your report.
