Hey Sean I see you told all about the big fish on Winnie I was wondering if you could tell us about the big ones on Bowstring. I was also wondering about an update on the water levels. Thanks

Where is the big fish on Bowstring

Bill,
Well lets start with the given, the water level, it is low or better yet extremely low. IT is as low if not a bit lower then last year. The North landings will probably be the only ones to use if you have a bigger boat.
Big fish in Bowstring? IS there no just kidding but I hear this question fairly often. There are big ones in there but as for numbers I think it is lacking compared to other lakes in the area. Early it seems that the better numbers of big fish are caught in or near the rivers coming in and out of Bowstring. I have had some success near the Rock Pile on the east shore. It seems that the larger fish are only catchable shallow for a short peroid of time and then they head to the Humps. The Northend of the lake is loaded with structure and this is where most of the larger fish seem to be, meaning you are much more likely to pull a 24 plus inch fish out there then in the shallow water. One thing that makes finding them a bit more difficult or shall I say catching them is the number of eater fish and Small northerns vs. big fish. Due to the fact that it is loaded with small northerns and has some good numbers of the smaller fish, more times then not one big fish can’t compete with the more active little fish. TO me Bowstring is more of a quantity lake. Have you ever fish Sand lake to the North. They are connected by river and it produces many more 24-29 inch fish.
So if your looking for that one or two good bites, try the 20-25 foot deep water humps with either a leech or crawler on a rig. Good Luck and let us know how you did.May 3, 2003 at 1:22 am #265798Bill, My father has a place up on Bowstring and I often get the fishing report from him every weekend. He has some reliable contacts who do quite a bit of fishing in the area. Now as far as big fish go It is rare, atleast in my experience. Now I have a couple of trips planned for late May and the middle of June And Am willing to provide any insight which may help my felllow fisherman catch a few more fish. I check the sight regularly so I will most likely see any posts. Keep in touch
SealegsMay 5, 2003 at 8:09 pm #265906Thanks for the reply Sean and sealegs I will be up there for opener. We usually fish over is the SW corner @ the mouth of the Bowstring river. We have a large group of 18 guys who all throw into the big fish pot. I think Sean is on the right track we he talks about going deep for the big fish especially in the middle of the day. of course seelegs if you have any extra spots I would be very happy to hear about them.
May 9, 2003 at 12:59 am #266226Great to hear you’re heading up there for opener, Some insight i have is that the lake is real low!! Dad measured 16 inches at the end of his dock. He suggests you bring some wadders along to get the boat on and off if your using the public access. I too have fished that SW corner early with success. You may want to try in tight to shore on the north west side near Trails End Resort. I also like to fish near the green boat house on the north end along the Rocky Shores. I won’t be up there for opener I have decided it not worth fighting all the traffic when there are plenty of good fisheries here in town (Ill be opening on Waconia). I will let you know what I hear!
SealegsMay 23, 2003 at 10:09 pm #267266THe opener is now over. I didn’t catch the $1000 fish but my boat partner did or maybe I should just call him the other guy in the boat. I just celebrated my 40th birthday the night before and maybe I celebrated too much. This guy wakes me up at 5:15 and drags me to the boat. We go to my favorite spot on the South side of Bowstring. At 5:45 he has the $1000 fish a four pounder in the livewell. We launched out of Snug Harbor which was great. You back your truck up and one of the dockworkers gets your boat off then when you get out to the sand bar the owner helps push the boat to the deeper water. No more public launch hassles for me. By the way I only caught 2 eyes on sat and none on sunday as noone would brave the 40mph winds. Most fish were caught on or by the rock pile. Actually Fish were stacked up in the water by where river enters the lake close to the rock pile. Another place to check next year.
