It’s not replacing anything it’s my first generator. Went with the 2000 Champion Dual Fuel. Runs on gas or propane. I have a Expedition so it makes transporting gas cans a smelly ride. Got it home today and it fired right up on propane. Looking forward to putting it to use in the new wheel house.

How long will it run on a 20lb’er?

They say 24 hours on Eco mode. All depends on how much load you are putting on it. You lose a couple hundred watts when running on propane vs. gas as well. I have a home brew 8X16 wheel house so the biggest draw will probably be a crock pot and furnace fan running at the same time. A led strip light at night. Should work good for my needs.

Will it power all the strobes and the motor for the flagpole as the same time?

The propane idea is interesting. The cost to use is almost double, however. If you use it every weekend, you’ll be hurting the wallet pretty quickly!

you should keep us updated on how loud it is and how happy you are with it throughout the winter. I really like the idea of the propane fuel, but the last one I researched had bad reviews.

They claim it’s 53db at 25 feet so it’s comparable to the Honda’s etc. It’s a 4 stroke so it’s quiet enough. The one bad review I read the guy was upset it was too loud for him but he was running it in his garage. Champion has been making dual fuel genny’s for a long time but not in this size before. I almost bought the 3100 model last year but it weighed in at just under 100lbs. and I didn’t want to lug that around all the time. I don’t have to run the generator all day and night in my application. Just when I want to charge the battery or run something 110 volt for a period of time like a crock pot or tv. I don’t watch much of any tv on the ice but I do have one for the occasions I want to watch a Wild game or something.

I will keep you updated as I get to using this on a regular basis.

How much propane does it use? Will you have issues with tanks or carbs freezing up when it’s cold out?

If LP goes crazy for price or is a hassle, Type II quality gas cans would solve the gasoline smell issue. An Eagle or Justrite will last a lifetime and are great for year around use with lawn equipment, etc.

Something isn’t right with the numbers, it will use a little more propane than gas, but it shouldn’t be twice as much. A bigger generator has this in its description

Using gasoline, the 439cc Champion engine produces 9375 starting watts and 7500 running watts, and will run for 8 hours at 50% load when the 6.0-gallon fuel tank is full. It produces 8400 starting watts and 6750 running watts, and will run for 5.5 hours at 50% load when using a 20-pound propane tank.

    7500-Watt Dual Fuel Generator

Gasoline has about 115000 BTUs per gallon and propane is around 91000 per gallon

I’m not expecting any more hassles than most people go through on the ice in extreme cold weather. I’m wondering if one of these storm shields would be worth the investment for keeping the wind and snow off of it?

For the price $599 at Acme Tools I think it’s going to serve my purpose well. I like the flexibility of running on either fuel. Maybe gas during the day for battery charging, running crock pot etc. and propane at night when just the furnace is running. See how it pans out this season.

I also like the digital fuel and voltage read outs.

Unless that wind cover is really cheap I wouldn’t bother. Just buy a rubbermaid tub and flip over it

I ran this for a couple hours today on propane. I want to get the 5 hour break in period over so I can put 5W-30 synthetic oil in for the cold starts this winter. As far as quiet it’s as quiet as any Honda or Yamaha 4 stroke of the same size. You are supposed to run it at varying loads during break in so I plugged it into the fish house. With the furnace fan, a crock pot the led interior lights on and a 12″ oscillating table fan running that moved the power consumption light up to about 25%. The generator was only about 6′ right outside the house and the sound of the furnace fan almost drowned out the noise from the generator. So as far as the noise level I give it 5 stars.

In order to put more of a load on it I brought the shop vac in to vacuum up the floor as it needed it anyhow. So adding the shop vac to all the above running that moved the power consumption light up to 50%. This kicked it out of Eco mode and the decibels went up but again same noise level as what I’m used to listening to Honda’s. It may be a bit louder running on gas but I haven’t run any gas through it yet. They must have at the factory because I can smell it when I opened the cap. It’s got a few other bells and whistles like a set of led lights that light up the reset breakers and a led that comes on with the push of a button to light up the gas cap area when it’s time to dump more gas in at night.

Not much real world testing yet but so far I’m pretty impressed with this unit and think it’s going to work well for my application.

An impressive machine at a good price. I like the dual fuel versatility. Looks like a well thought out machine.

I’ll be looking at Champion and Predator (Harbor Freight) when it’s time to replace my off the grid cabin generator.

My son mentioned the Predator at Harbor Freight yesterday. He claimed the stores are telling people to bring it back a few months before the 3 year warranty runs out and they will give them a new one and send the old one in under warranty replacement. Makes no sense to me. Who ever is manufacturing these for Harbor Freight isn’t going to be around in 3 years giving away generators and I’m not good at doing things like that on a long time schedule like 3 years.

For the price point this is a feature packed generator but talk to me in March and we will see how it holds up to a season on the ice.
