I run a couple of the 7 foot Eyecon Medium Heavy moderate tip—I think that is what they are called anyway—and I really like them. Dean recommended them for running 3 way and live bait and they have exceeded my expectations. They have put many fish in my boat and didn’t kill my wallet doing it!!!!
Get the Scheels walleye series bottom bouncer rod. I have been using them for a couple years and picked up another one yesterday. They were 20% off so it came out to $103.99. Its hard to beat their in store replacement warranty.
The Scheels guy was pushing that one pretty hard. Looked nice, other than the Fenwick seemed to have a better seat for the reel etc.
Do you remember what the model number etc. is on that Scheels rod?
Well, if ya ask me, I say ” I ain’t ever had a fish come up and bite on the rod yet so it surely doesn’t have to be some expensive fancy name brand rod…”
For a $100 I could buy 3 very dependable, efficient bouncer/spinner rods. A 7ft. graphite composite medium action NO NAME (or MH) works just fine. But–what do I know? lol
If ya ask the 15 year old girl and her mother I had out yesterday–using my $30 no name rods, you will hear–“we got our limits and put back many big ones and have never fished before!” Just think if they had used a $100 rod…
Okay…just my 2 cents.
I’m with Steve, bouncing isn’t a technique for me that I require a ton of sensitivity or fancy rod. I have got 3 shimano convergence MH XF in 7’2″ and 6’8″. They go for $60 if not on sale. Small reel seat so its light and transmits all the feel I need from a bouncer.
I hear what you’re saying, Tim and Steve. In my experience, the biggest mistake when using bouncers is trying to aggressively “set the hook” vs. a slow sweeping action. Doesn’t much matter what kind of rod you use if you’re too aggressive on the hook set – at least in my experience.
For many years, my main bottom bounce rod was a cheap Gander MH sale rod. Worked ok. And I can’t “prove” a more expensive rod catches any more fish.
But I’d like to try!
Anyway…the hunt continues.
I use the Scheels Walleye Series 7′ up front and Okuma Dead eye 8’6″ bouncing rod in back using Daiwa Megaforce 100 Left and right handed reels pretty deadly set-up 10lb fireline of course
Check out the Okuma Deadeye bouncer rod. They are 7’10 with telescopic handle. They have an awesome tip that loads up well and when mr walley turns he is hooked. I have used the 7ft St.Croix Legend Tourney($250) bouncer rod for years and there is no comparison between the 2 IMO. The Okuma up here is $129.00 so I would assume they are a little cheaper down there. Check them out I’m sure you will not be disappointed
I was back at Scheels today and picked up a couple for some friends. The tournament series rod felt just as good so I picked up a couple of those for 79.99. They are 7′ Medium action. They also have a 7’2″ MH but that felt too heavy to me. Steve is right you don’t need expensive rods for bottom bouncers, but I don’t consider 80-100 very expensive for a rod either.
