Border Country Papermouths

Papermouths might not be the best way to describe the border country giant crappies that are available right now! There is nothing paper like about them. Fish that big have some serious bone mixed in as well! Imagine crappies with mouths so big that they look like bass when they come up the hole. Seriously…these are big crappies. I know everybody has their not so secret big crappie lake where they will get some big fish. Big is a relative term… I have not shared much about these fish and I am careful about when I go and who comes along on these monster fish trips. They are not easy to find or catch by any means, but they are vulnerable. Classic locations on the right bodies of water will produce some huge fish up to and over 17 inches in length once in a while. If you find ’em you need not worry about tiny tungsten jigs and other finesse presentations coupled with 2lb test line. They will eat walleye sized presentations all day some days. I do prefer a light braid with a 4 pound leader though, just so I can feel like I am fishing crappies at least! If you are ever up for an adventure consider a trip to Voyageurs National Park.
