I know there are a few around in the Minnesota River Valley but I’ve never seen one or captured one on trail cam. For areas where they’re thick, are they harder on newborn fawns than coyotes? I thought they were always more of a rodent eater. I personally would like to see more cats and less yotes.

See them in Wright County on occasion. Buddy has them come up the creek that runs to the Crow River through his property.

I thought there was a bobcat where I was fishing this past year. There was weird growling noises from the woods. I was playing bobcat sounds on my phone and it was answering back. Turned out to be a bird. I think it was a Gray Catbird.

    Nice pics Steve!!
Always fun to see Bobcats. I saw one three days in a row while hunting two years ago in Central MN. Lots of trail cam pics but don’t normally get to see them with the eyeballs.
I had a few pics saved with kittens, but I can’t seem to find them.

Calling one in would be a rush I bet.

That cat was shot with .17 hmr was 19 lbs . Shot raccoons bigger ha . Actually that spot was in an abandoned old junk yard next to town . There was a giant buck in there also I was after . First time I tried calling it there was a coyote I shot ha .

forgive my ignorance but do you eat the cats or what do you do with them?

Eat the cats?! lol please be kidding me

I assume the pelt has some value, if its in decent shape. Just like a yote or fox or any other predator/furbearer.

Central MN here we usually see multiple a year when out hunting. They will show up on the cameras over the year. As the snow piles up and the deer herd on our land more show up along with other predators.

They say Mountain Lion is great, maybe bobcat is too lol. Anyone ever try Yote? I wouldn’t seek either one out, but could be talked into trying them pretty easily.

Years ago my cousins had one that’d come around their farm in Western WI. They’d see it out in the fields and stuff around the house and it became less skittish to human territory over time.

One day they called us up to come see it AFTER their German Shepherd cornered it in the hay barn and the cat tried to fight its way out. The Shepherd grabbed it by the head and basically bit right through it and left the pelt immaculate. They have it on a wall at the cabin now as a cool artifact.

Steven Rinella did and it was on an episode of meateater. He said it was actually pretty good, but he has yet to find something he really distastes. LOL

Short answer; Although there have been questions about the impact of bobcats on game birds and deer,
no study anywhere in the United States, has concluded that bobcats are a limiting factor on populations of game animals. Study of the stomach contents, has shown such an insignificant amount of game animal (including turkey) matter, that the impact from Bobcats to these prey, is so small as to be immaterial.

Long answer found in this link:https://www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/uploads/wildlife/bobcats-of-iowa.pdf

Other than fur harvest or “trophy” mounts, there is absolutely no scientific based reason, to kill a Bobcat. Speculation on game animal population reduction due to Bobcat predication, has been proven to be purely rumors.

I’ve also heard that Mountain Lion is great. Weirds me out a bit, though. When it comes to eating mammals, eating carnivores just feels strange to me.

I think it was that Mountain Man show – that guy up in Alaska that flew into his remote trapping cabin caught a lynx and said they were excellent eating. Gotta think bobcat is similar.

One cat I sold for 27 dollars the other I had tanned and it’s on my wall in the basement . Didn’t eat either of them.

Gotta make the cat spit rickets salve. Cures arthritis, rickets, whooping cough, polio, gingivitis, rabies, sore muscles, eye twitch, tinnitus, and hepatitis A. I cant imagine any cat tastes great. Same with racoon, but people eat that. I’d try porcupine though chubby little suckers are probably tasty af.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I’ve seen a lot around my house in northern MN but they are always bolting across the road.

I have no interest in trapping them but shooting one would be cool. How well do they come to a call? Can you run em with dogs in Iowa?
