How long does everyone wait to set the hook when a bobber goes down when walleye fishing? I tend to set the hook earlier while the fish is pulling line, but greater risk of yanking it right out of the fishes mouth.

Been awhile since I last ice fished walleyes. When I did, I would let them take it till they stopped and then hit them when it started moving again. They often stop to get the Minnow a little deeper into their mouth before swimming off.

    This is what I do.

When I notice it’s down and I find a safe place to put my beer.

That is also why I do what I do.

A wise old timer once told me when the bobber goes down to sit back, crack a beer, light up a cigarette and then that should be about the right amount of time to then set the hook.

Same. But like Rip said have to find a safe spot for the beer first.

depends on how fast the bobber goes…fast down, fast hook set.

slow submersion…well I wait for like it the move about 16-20 inches or so. No guarantee but always on a prayer.

Like others have said it really depends how the bobber is acting, but to be honest I dont use bobbers all that often anymore with noodle rods, I just watch the rod load up and then set the hook.

Sometimes it’s when the other guy in the shack starts seeing his bobber going down after the fish has collected both offerings and tangled everything. That’s usually the sweet spot for a giant hookset.

Usually when the bobber is down about 6″. Less or more time depending on how far the hook is in the mouth or if you don’t hook up.
