You can ask if the law is applied unevenly, you can talk about how important freedom is. Then ask yourself if the law saves lives.
    What do you value?

Then let’s require passengers aboard ALL watercraft to wear life jackets at ALL times. You’ll save 600% more lives than this law.

If You decide to not wear a PFD that only affects you, that’s how it is different than a boating safety class (big difference!) If you ride a motorcycle w/o a helmet that should not be against the law, if you have someone riding with you especially a minor w/o a helmet that’s different.

Exactly. I stated this like 2 pages ago. Someone not operating a boat safely affects other’s safety. Someone not wearing a PFD bears no deference to public safety except their own. If someone wants to dig their own grave, have at it. But don’t start digging mine too.

Exactly why the kill switch law exists too.

And just for the record, I think PFDs would save a lot more lives if they were mandatory in some manner.

Just a couple weeks ago I took the BoatUS course for boating in New York State waters. It was the only state I could find in my travel that didn’t specifically ALLOW the USCG MMC to be recognized. The law was written so poorly it may have…but only my hair dresser will know for sure.

It was a free course and lasts your lifetime. Well free until you ordered a completion care that ran $15. 6 hours of on line classes.

Word on the water is that more and more states will be adopting Boaters Safety.
Not really a big deal, I didn’t think. Brush ups are a good thing.

Some boat insurance polices offer a discount if you complete a boater safety course. Just a FYI in case you want to save some money on your premiums.

I started buying the inflatable PFD’s and I wear mine all the time, don’t require it for passengers unless they’re kids.

    True.

I’ve pleaded with family and friends on this sort of thing for years. It’s like talking to a brick wall so I have up. An individual’s will power cannot be forced, even if it’s family or friend.

Don’t agree that a PFD is just for you or even just for your family’s sake. If you don’t wear one and that puts you in a dangerous situation that requires the assistance of search & rescue, it’s their life you put at risk as well.

That’s a personal decision that you need to make Glenn. State law requires it only to be accessible, not worn. I am in no position to tell you otherwise either.

I bet your family would prefer that you wear one though.
