I’m looking to purchase a 16ft northwoods king fish. And most of the boats I’m looking at have a 40hp and I’ve seen them with as high at 75hp but harder to find with bigger power. So to the guys that own one or something similar. Is the 40hp enough power for 3 adults in the boat on a lake with average waves to get up on plane. Or would you have rather gotten a bigger hp engine. Yes I know get the biggest hp you can afford…..TIA

75 hp outboard seems a bit high for that boat. I tried finding the boat online without any success. There should be a US Coast Guard stamp on the boat and the max hp rating will be listed.

Seems the max hp rating is 80hp. That is a rare size. Id be surprised if you find many with a 75 on since its a relatively light boat. A 60 should move it along pretty good, but a 40 seems on the smallish size.

I’ve seen these boats before, my buddy has one (well, a 16ft northwood, not sure exactly which model). He runs a 40 and it is a bit underpowered. For his once a year use case he’s fine with it, I would not be

It has been said many times here max rated hp is best. A dealer once told me as long as you are with in 20% of max hp it will be fine if you don’t max out the weight. You can bet you won’t be doing any tubing behind that 40 hp boat.
