Who here has their pups riding shotgun? Let’s see some pictures of dogs in boats to get us exciting for boating season!

Side note – I have 2 new pups this year. One of them is 6 months and still urinate when nervous. If anyone has any tips on how to acclimate them to a boat as well as a good way to clean dog pee from boat carpet I’m all ears 🙂

I have a washdown pump in my boat. I do an immediate flush. Once a year I power wash the carpet. Luckily it doesn’t happen very often.
Micha loved being in the boat. Didn’t care much for fish but she kept an eye out for birds. Once we had a loon swimming under the boat. She wanted it bad. I told her no and it would be battle she probably wouldn’t win.
Zoey the chocolate lab loves fishing. She knows when you have a fish on and is right there watching the battle. She kisses every fish. In the photo she has a tough decision as to which she want’s more.
With both after going fishing just a couple of times I could just say get in the boat and they head right to the boat and jump in. But being labs they usually take a quick dip first.

Get rid of the carpet and go with a hard surface.

Cosmo loves to go but once we get out there, she mostly sleeps. The first season I took her out on the boat she was all about the fish. She would sniff and lick them. That fascination wore off after a month though. She perks up when there’s a duck or goose nearby, or another dog barking somewhere. She doesn’t even wake up when a muskie comes in the boat!

Our girl Shyla. Trips get cut short, about 6 hrs, when she’s along, but that’s ok. If it’s going to be rough out, we don’t take her, and the sad look on her face when we leave is almost too much to bear.

I used to take my pup with me all the time until I made the mistake of playing with him with my musky rod with a ball at the end. After that when ever I cast he would jump in the water after the lure. Not a big deal unless I was musky fishing. (I am not the one who dressed him) My German Shepard is 9 months old now and I am hoping she is calm enough to come with me this year.

Sophie at first was super nervous in the boat. She would pee or puke. Water vinegar, and carpet shampoo. The life jacket is a must for her. Even tho my one Pic she didn’t have it on.
When my kids jump in the water she freaks out and tries to hop in and rescue them. Watching my kid get his life jacket grabbed and her dragging him to the boat against his will is pretty entertaining

Ripley loves boat rides. He prefers the pontoon but also likes to ride in our Nautique and even rides in the 14′ bench seat Alumacraft. Heck, I’ve even taken him out on our standup paddleboards.

I generally don’t bring him fishing because he is super interested in fishing, and it gets annoying. He gets in the way. I can’t even pull my gear out at home without him getting all amped up and whining. He will sit and watch the kids fish off the dock all day.

Our last dog was a great Dane, and he loved boat rides, too. If it was calm, he’d stand in the bow and enjoy the breeze, but as soon as it got choppy, he’d lie down or come and sit on me. Imagine driving a tiller with a 150 lb great Dane in your lap–it got some strange looks. Somewhere, I have a pic. rotflol

i’m totally afraid to put my big lab in a boat for fear of what he may do. especially for the first time. i travel to different lakes alot. i’m going to try it this summer on the cabin lake, that way if he’s a disaster i can just bring him to shore.

i had a lab once where i went out fishing, with others on shore and he started to swim out to us….needed to turn around!!!

Our dog hates the water but used to love the boat. She’s too old to get in and out anymore unfortunately.

we had a chocolate lab and a sheltie with us in the boat. the sheltie liked getting up on the side rail of the boat…..sometimes a little to far. we hit a wave from another boat and in she went. we knew shelties arent fans of water and didnt know they could swim. man what panic, that was my wifes little baby, i feared for my life whistling man did i hustle to get her out of the lake with the landing net!!!!!!!

I put our dog in the boat a few times while it was on the trailer when he was a pup. Not sure how much of a difference it made, but never had any issues with jumping out or peeing.

Here’s the last time they ever got to be in the boat while fishing lol Had their harnesses on because I knew one would jump out eventually and shortly after this picture one couldn’t take it anymore, jumped out, and started following one of the lines we were trolling. Got a husky jerk in his leg before I could do anything about it but only one hook that wasn’t deep.

All of our labs have loved being in the boat, we started them all young. They can be a pain in the butt at times, but we enjoy having them with us.

My dogs aren’t great fishing partners. It can be fun if you’re more into chaos than fishing.
