Time to replace my truck. Its nickel and dimeing me. I need something more reliable. So Im looking into replacing it. Not sure I need a truck anymore, maybe an suv. Question is how much does my boat, motor, trailer weighs. 18 1/2 foot Skeeter bass fiber glass rig and 150 hp Merc 2 stroke, been moded but that didnt add signicant weight. Plus single axel stèel trailer. Im guessing about 3500lbs. Any others guess? Want to know so I can shop for another tow vehicle. Gotta think power and braking power. Thanks All!

    Go weigh it.

    This.

You can go to a local scrap yard and weigh it for $3-10

I’d guess around 4k pounds with gear and full tank of fuel.

    Perfect topic for a pool.

    My guess is 3,000.

My hunch is that you’ll end up looking at smaller profile vehicles with a #5000 tow rating or higher. Four Runner, Durango, Grand Cherokee, etc.

I’m doing the same research as I’m probably downsizing from my 1/2 ton pickup in another year.

My 2015 Grand Cherokee is rated at 7,000 (Hemi, tow package, brake controller) It has no issue pulling a 4,000 pound trailer or stopping it with the brakes, where things get sketchy is in a crosswind scenario where the trailer can have a tendency to try to pull you one way or another. Visibility is a bit of a pain as well, extended tow mirrors vibrate too much at highways speeds. On another note the crazy tight turning radius of the Jeep makes backing at the ramp super awesome.

My last few vehicles in order:
    99 F150
    2001 RAM 1500
    2005 Grand Cherokee
    2009 Grand Cherokee
    2011 Silverado 1500
    2015 Grand Cherokee

There are advantages to both the midsize SUV and the full size pickup. I am gong the opposite way and will be shopping for a 3/4 ton turbo diesel next summer. Need to occasionally pull bigger loads and we would like to get into a camper at some point.

I will say get the biggest engine possible and factory tow package if you are going with a SUV.

Does anyone know the closest scale to Minnetrista? West suburbs. Always use to use farm supply in waconia, but my dad went there and nobody could tell him if the scales still worked or if they were baried in a pile of dirt.

3500 Lbs. will be pretty close.
I would get a vehicle rated at at least 5000 lbs. towing.

Just a point of reference, my buddy tows a boat that I know weighs more than the OP’s with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. He tows it from Cali to Wyoming every summer with no issues.

I pulled our 21 foot Wellcraft with no problems with my GMC Acadia with towing package and a 5000 pound towing rating. Boat and trailer plus half load of fuel was just over 4000 pounds. It towed like a dream. I’ve towed equipment and cargo trailers that weighted half what the boat did, but towed way worse.

Guys tend to fixate only on HP when choosing a towing vehicle.

What makes a boat tow well right up to the max vehicle rating has more to do with the trailer and overall towing setup.

    1. 2 axle trailers tow better, distribute weight better, and track better than single axle trailers. Also, many boats in the 18+ foot class are put on single axle trailers that are just barely within their weight rating for the boat and with gear and fuel are often overloaded.

    2. Surge or electric brakes in proper operating condition properly tuned.

    3. Tongue weight must be correct or you have to adjust it by moving the boat on the trailer. I’ve often wondered how many dealers ever vary thier setup of a trailer to properly weight the tongue?

Grouse brings up some great points, a properly set up trailer is going to be very beneficial in your towing, and if your boat comes in at 3500# most smaller trucks and suvs are going to be options for you.
