After 2 incidents of items being taken out of my boat I was wondering if anybody has a reasonable idea of a boat alarm? As much as I’d like to catch somebody In the act and bust their legs with a 7 iron I’d be happy just making them go away.
I was thinking of a car alarm with the mercury motion switch?

That or a proximity sensor would work well too. Just set the sensitivity to chirp if someone stands next to the boat, and alarm goes off if they get into the boat. Pretty good idea you have there.

I believe Cabelas sells a commercially made boat alarm.

T-H Marine. Bass guys have been using them for several years.

I like the motion sensor style under a boat cover. Proximity or annoying false alarms don’t excite me. Some of the motion sensors will alarm to a device on your key ring so you can hear it from your bedside at night.

Are we talking about a boat parked in your driveway at home or hotel parking lot? Or are you getting ripped off at a gas station or restaurant ?

If at home or hotel, you can use a baby monitor.

I live in a decent area on a little dead end street, it’s maddening! I have no tolerance for thieves..

Keep a mean pit bull or 2 in the boat.

Is it Ranger or skeeter, that is having built in alarms and that will lock all the compartments also.

I would look at T-H Marine heard good things, I would love to have an 2 way pager on my boat.

We should ask, James what they do on road trips.

I’ve been awakened by a T-H marine alarm at McQuoid’s before. I ran into the guy in the parking lot the next morning, he said he loves it and wouldn’t go anywhere without it. The alarm must have made the guys high tail it, as our boat was right next to it with nothing taken. I guess there’s perks to having a crappy looking boat…

any idea how much power the alarm drains the battery? I love the idea of leaving the alarmed armed while I’m away from my cabin, but I don’t want to show up to find the battery is dead as well..

I worked for a car alarm place for years and have done boats/motor cycles also, we used a Viper alarm with the prox sensor like mentioned above. Over time they will drain a not so good battery. But a good charged battery you should be fine for a couple weeks at a time. The draw is in ma. So it would take a long time to drain a 700amp battery. If it drew 500ma it would take 1400 hours to drain a charged 700 amp battery dead.

Even with a alarm it will not stop a smash and grab kinda theft. A guy high on meth does not care about a little alarm sounding for the 10 seconds it takes to grab your locater.
