Boat access on opener

    Hey all,

Thinking of heading to ML for opener on Saturday. Never been opening weekend and am just wondering how crazy the accesses are? I’m looking to fish the north side. Any suggestions on a pretty sure bet of finding parking?

    Thanks!

The weather will likely play a big role. If it was going to be a nicer day then you might run into a reasonable amount of boats/anglers but Saturday looks pretty friggin’ cold out so I don’t think it will be an issue. The over night low on Friday looks to be below freezing and the daytime high won’t even get to 60.

There are four public accesses on the north side. Garrison has two (south and north), wealthwood, and malmo. Wealthwood and Malmo are shallower accesses that can sometimes have a lot of sand buildup. I don’t know how high or low the water is this spring but if you have a big boat, I would use one in Garrison instead. Parking is reasonable at both, but South Garrison has a double ramp and north only has one.

If there is a south wind, can be tricky to launch up there, but probably won’t be busy.

Access through a resort and pay the $10-15 fee. You will be able to launch / load in a harbor and have safe parking. Fishers, Red Door, Castaways, Wilderness, Barnacles, to name a few. waytogo

With a total C&R reg in place, I see a lot of people going to other lakes.

2 of the accesses on the north side (sorry, don’t know the names of the accesses but they were between Garrison and Wealthwood) were complete crap as of this past weekend. The cement slabs were heaved up due to the ice. I highly doubt the DNR will have them fixed by this weekend. None of the public docks were put in yet either.

A protected harbor to drop your boat for $10 and you help out a local business during the crazy times is your best bet.

Thanks guys! I’ll probably go the resort route.

As of Sunday night the DNR had not put the docks in at the public access or buoys out in Cove Bay.
Hopefully they come out of hiding and find time to do it this week yet.

They have plenty of time to set the docks. I think it’s the county who does the buoys.
