Bluegills in the Weeds

I fished a bit on New Years day with minimal results out deep. On 1/2 I ventured to a small lake in Wisconsin to target Bluegills and Crappie. I spent some time searching for Crappies in 18+ fow with little success so I focused on shallower water. It only took a few holes and I found Green Weeds which were holding some nice Bluegills. I had to weed through some small fish but achieved my goal of getting a few Bluegills to break the 9″ mark.

I believe that pan fish are like bass. There are certain fish that spend their whole life in shallow/weedy area’s while other fish spend most of their life except the spawn out in deeper water in the main basin’s. on any given day one or the other may be on a better bite. A few weeks ago we got onto a good sunfish and crappie bite in deeper water. We had a fair # of 10-11″ sunfish and several Crappies in the 13-14″ range. I’m sure looking forward to getting back out on that lake near ice out. I think there are some 12″ sunfish and 15″ crappie in that lake. I’d sure like to catch me some of those. The picture is of some of the more average sized fish we keep.

Thanks Glenn. Actually nothing was wrong with the flasher, that’s just how it comes across when filmed. Not enough frames per second to make it appear as a steady image.

Yeah, it’s weird. I shoot on the same setting (30 frames per second) the majority of the time and at low-light times the flasher comes across very clear and then mid-day it always looks like that during playback.

Nice work, I know that most bluegills will stay near weeds all year long as long as they stay somewhat green and they will almost burrow into them from watching underwater footage to avoid predators. In South Dakota we find some of our sunfish in 5-7 fow all winter long. – QB

If you’re able to find Green weeds or weeds with any life to them come January, you are almost guaranteed to find fish hanging around them.

    Hi everyone,

I am traveling to visit some friends and they plan to go ice fishing on a lake I have never fished before. They said that it is really shallow, 9 ft deep at its deepest point, and very weedy. They said that they get a lot of pike action on tip ups but I am also interested in targeting some of the blue gills that they say are in there.

What types of lures work well in shallow murky water for blue gills? Or what areas of the lake should I target? Just looking for some friendly advice to try and track down these bluegills!

Big Fat Boys—-Bring a camera to find them, flashers in shallow weedy water really do not give you much of a picture. keep droppin’ that camera down till you see bigguns.

any advice on jigs? I normally fish large flat boddies of water for walleyes, perch, whitefish and am used to using spoons and jiggin/rippin raps most often. just looking to see what i need to pick up! Thanks for the advice. I have some small tungsten jigs that i planned on using.

It’s sort of personal preference but when I’m targeting bluegill I usually use a 3mm or maybe 4mm Tungsten jig with a small plastic or 1 eurolarvae on the hook. I personally like the Kenders tungsten jigs but there are a ton of different manufactures and models out today.
