I just bought a Black Betty Free Fall from Reeds this week and when I pulled it out of the box it doesn’t reel in. Is there something you’re supposed to do to it to make it work? There isn’t much for instructions in the box.

I had one that did that when I first bought it. I tightened the drag and then loosened it back up some. Have had it for 2 tears now and no other problems. Hpoe that helps.

If the drag is really loose it will not reel in. Try tightening up the drag and see if that cures the problem.

This is most likely the problem.

You tighten the drag by turning the star wheel towards you (clockwise) when holding the reel. Every other reel I’ve owned you tighten the drag by turning the star wheel counter clockwise.

Every reel that’s shipped has the drag backed all the way off.

Yes… That was it, thanks for the help.

Sorry about the late response. I got home and realized I had all of my credentials for this site on my work computer only.

Loosen up the nut on the handle that looks like a sailboat steering wheel. Great reels but their definitely should come with directions cuz myself and probably most who have bought them have had the same problem.

I recall having the same problem when I got mine as well, took me a few minutes of thinking “I am missing something obvious” before I found it. I also ordered the wrong one… I’m right handed, so I’ll order the right handed one. Except I’m right handed, meaning I hold the pole in my right and reel with my left. Felt dumb after that.
