Waiting for the school bus this morning with my son… standing in 3-4” of fresh powder. I noticed some birds chirping and singing. A sign of Spring?

Spring is on it’s way. The days are getting longer which is what I really care about. I hate being in the dark the majority of the day. Temps will follow. All we need is a couple 40 degree sunny days and we will start to have this winter fade from our memory.

DTFebruary 27, 2019 at 8:53 am #1838920Never stopped
You still got some time based on the flocks of Robin’s I’ve been seeing. They haven’t left.
Something weird about Robin’s when they are down here is you never see them feeding on the ground, at least I haven’t seen it yet.

When we had those -30 degree days, I saw some flocks of robins here gorging on crab apples!

I’ve had Pheasents in a junk fruit tree I have in the yard. They are hungry and will be all over the sides of the roads so watch for them.

zooksPosts: 922February 27, 2019 at 10:11 am #1838941My resident cardinals were singing all weekend in St. Louis Park, definitely a photoperiod thing.
February 27, 2019 at 10:20 am #1838946i think the birds are eating fermented berries and buzzed up………..or there as screwed up as the weather forcasters!!!!!!!
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559February 27, 2019 at 10:27 am #1838949I’ve seen robins all winter along a parkway here in town feeding on crabapples. None in the yard yet but mourning doves have been here all winter too.

I wish I was able to get a picture, about two weeks ago when I was dropping the Wife off at work there was a tree that was full of cardinals. I have never seen so many in one place.

I hear cardinals singing here every morning. Central MN.
February 27, 2019 at 3:36 pm #1839030Ok, since you guys don’t care about the first robins of spring I am going ahead and using them as target practice.

February 27, 2019 at 5:06 pm #1839042I’ve had doves all winter at my place in SW WI. 2 of them sit on the heated bird bath and it drives the dog nuts!
February 28, 2019 at 6:27 pm #1839367They are so poor and hungry they are just trying to sing for there supper.

I’ll stick with crows for target work. I see Possum tracks in the snow today…..that’d make a nice target too.
Seeing a lot of Eagle activity in the park along the river lately and I am certain one was a golden. It most likely wandered over from Whitewater or the Alma area. The Bald Eagles nesting just north of here are in the nest a lot now too. Eggs maybe already? I haven’t checked the Decorah cams lately and they may show eggs if its happening now.
I’ll also note that gold finch males are just starting to get a bit brighter yellow in the bib area under the beaks. That’s always a sure sign of spring but with another 2-3 inches due tomorrow its getting really hard to believe spring will ever come.
February 28, 2019 at 11:01 pm #1839437I heard them the other morning as well. It was about as strange a sound as hearing a gas auger on the ice. The birds were a welcome sound. Can’t say as much for the other one.
Rod BentPosts: 360March 21, 2019 at 9:29 am #1844875Heard my first red-winged blackbird this morning! Last Friday I counted a flock of 24 robins in Cottage Grove. And saw my first muskrat (road-kill unfortunately for him).
Spring has sprung at last. It’s like getting out of jail!March 21, 2019 at 9:32 am #1844879After all the snow I had neglected my feeders for a couple of weeks. Went out Tuesday and filled them all. Doesn’t take long for the birds to find them again. Also the Deer are finally moving around again.
March 21, 2019 at 9:35 am #1844880I saw a turkey heading towards my smoker!
I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there!!
