Have been enjoying our new deck lately at night listening to some music, sipping on some woodford double oak and these taradactiles keep coming to our pine trees. They are about the size of a nerf football and 18-24” wingspan or so. Sorry about the crappy pictures but this is the best I have gotten so far. Any ideas?? My wife thinks they are dinosaurs and that Jurassic park is real….

Seems a bit small for a heron but dang, that would be cool if they are relocating the rookery to our backyard in Shoreview

After looking for birds that look like herons I guess there is 8 different types of them in mn. Maybe it’s one of them other types of heron

Green heron, I have been trying to get a picture of them near my home.
It is rather difficult to get a decent one.
Then as a teaser, one flew into a tree in my back yard, stayed a full minute when I did not have a camera.

Another option could be a Virginia Rail. But that Night Heron looks pretty convincing.

I’d say maybe green heron too. Listen for what sounds like a scratchy voice saying the letter Q. That’s what their call sounds like to me. Are you near the water?

Toucan Sam stayed overnight and let me snap a little bit better photo today. Are we still thinking green heron?

Your pics are bad but I think its a Green Heron. That size and shape and in a tree all speak GH. I see them all the time at my cabin. They nested in my tree one year.

Yep, that’s a green heron. They’re fun to watch.

The saga continues, found a baby on the ground today, I would imagine it is one of the heron kids that fell out of the nest? We put some water down, I feel like I should go put a dozen fatheads out there too. The 10 year old daughter is having a field day

I’d try to leave it alone as much as possible while still trying to keep it safe from critters. When we were kids we were told the mother bird/animal would reject the baby if we touched it but I think that was just so we’d leave them alone. However, green herons are pretty skittish and the adults might be afraid to tend to the little one if people are visible.

It would probably be a $500 Goose.
