Bigger battery-yes or no

Lots of people on this site have said to get the biggest battery I can get for my boat-getting a 24 volt system with 2 2 size 27-30s would fit but would be a special order, salesperson said it would not be worth the extra expense for a small bump. Would not ever go all day fishing, but when I’m out of town with the rig I’m not always able to recharge.

The larger the batteries you have, the longer life they will have.

The deeper you draw a battery down over and over, the shorter the life.

This goes for any type of battery. What you need to do is compare the amp hours (ah) or the reserve capacity (rc). Regardless of the group size of the battery, these are the numbers that matter most with deep cycle batteries.

Choose the ones with the most ah or rc that you can fit or afford.

Here’s an example of what I bought at the Interstate Batteries store a couple weeks ago. I bought the SRM-29 over the SRM-27 because the rc was so much higher.

Interstate srm 29 will fit in an group 27 tray. Despite what they will tell you it works.

Group 29-30-31 batteries are all the same size. Some may be a little taller but they all use the same size battery tray. Most large battery trays will work for group 27 to 31.

Mine wouldn’t. Believe me, I tried. It was close though.

Where are you buying batteries from and how much? I know Interstate should have a pile of SRM-29.

The dealership that I ordered my G3 from-they have been great, I mentioned this forum, he told me I could add subtract, tweak at any time (he may regret that offer!) Anyway they use Interstate so that chart that was posted about Interstate RC was helpful.

Always go for the larger size battery. That doesn’t always mean the bigger block but the one that has the better ah and rc. Now if the numbers are close and there is a big price difference, you will have to weigh that out.

I’d go with the bigger battery.
