Some friends from the East Coast are coming in mid February for an ice fishing trip. Previous trips to LOW haven’t been very productive mainly due to weather (-30 below once, and white out closed the roads the other), so we are looking to stay closer to home and get on some fish. Not really concerned with keepers, since they won’t be taking any home anyway. We will have portables with for jumping around during the day. Mainly looking for a big house that can accommodate 4-6 grown men comfortably. Doesn’t have to be the Hilton, but something clean and comfortable and on or near the mudflats preferably. Any recommendations are welcome! TIA

Big Sleeper House Recommendation?

I’ll admit, I don’t know too many resorts that pull out on the flats from the east side. I do know that Mac’s Twin Bays has some decent larger houses that go out a ways, 5-6 miles (gravel). Appeldoorn’s also has some nice houses for your sized crew but they only go as far as 4 mile (Highway Bar). Hunter’s Point usually has roads to the flats but not usually rentals out that far. If you’re set on the flats maybe, Myr Mar would be a good fit. Or Twin Pines. As I said before, I’m not too familiar with the west side. Good Luck!!
October 21, 2016 at 10:09 am #1646183A few of us rented one from Hunters point last year in February – 2mile reef, Banana reef, Flamingo reef and it was good but at the same time the reports coming from the north side were way better. People were catching a lot more fish, not that we didn’t catch 20+ fish. Barnacles and Red door are nice houses usually.
October 21, 2016 at 10:35 am #1646190Yeah I’m not too concerned with location, anywhere on the NE, N or NW side would be fine. More interested in a clean comfortable house, at a fair price. I’ll be running and gunning even if they put it right on where I wanted to start fishing.
October 21, 2016 at 10:41 am #1646191Most of them are fairly nice, some newer then others. Spend some time on google checking out rates. One nice thing about hunters point is if you don’t leave with a limit of fish, if the state opens it up, they will give you fillets to bring home.
Only place I’d say to stay away from is Eddy’s. 9 out of 10 people that stayed in their houses caught no/few fish and had bad experiences with their employees.
MNdrifterPosts: 1671October 21, 2016 at 11:36 am #1646213I gotta say I was happy staying at Red Door last year. I just stayed in their motel but they sure were busy moving their rentals around. Their motel was nice and clean, they seemed decent, so I would be surprised if their fish houses were crappy.
deertrackerPosts: 9235October 21, 2016 at 12:51 pm #1646237I have stayed at the Red Door and Hunter’s. I currently have two house booked on separate weekends out of Hunters this year. Nothing against Red Door, I just want to be closer to the east side rocks where I’m more comfortable finding fish. The interior of Hunter’s houses may be a little nicer as far as finish goes. One of the house I have rented is the big 16×36 out of Hunter’s.

If you want access to a bar/burgers hunters or Castaways.
Closest to the flats will be Red Door and they’ll have sleepers on the mud as well.
Appeldorns probably has the most options for larger houses.
October 22, 2016 at 11:42 am #1646362I have stayed at a number of them from the west side, south side and east side. Some nicer than others as far as amenities and cleanliness. By far Mac’s Twin Bay had the nicest plus Kevin Mcquoid is a walleye tournament angler and guide so you can expect he takes the fishing seriously. Nice restaurant there too. The Wharf is an option too.
One other thing to consider, if you can go any other days other than Friday-Saturday, most outfits discount 50% for the weekdays. That’s when I always go.October 22, 2016 at 6:45 pm #1646389Thanks for the recommendations, unfortunately we are too young (relatively) to be living that cozy retired, book whenever we feel like it life, like you Andy ! Personally I am just pumped to get back on my favorite walleye lake, and making fun of East Coasters while teaching them how to rip lips is just icing on the cake.
October 25, 2016 at 10:01 am #1646906Mac’s Twin Bay will have large sleeper’s out on the gravel bars. We do good all the way till the end of the season out there. They have very nice houses too. You won’t be disappointed. This is going to be an excellent year.

November 4, 2016 at 12:04 pm #1648760As others have said lots of good places but my vote goes to
Macs Twin Bay.
