Big ducer, little boat

How are you guys, or heard of guys placing their large totalscan transducers on your average 14′ boats?

My father is having tough time with placement and after I saw the size of the ducer myself I have no clue as well.

    14′ s-14 Lund with a short shaft 20hp.

Side mount? Extendable pole to reach under motor for SI?

    Appreciate any thoughts.

I use a Scully portable, extending transducer mount. It clamps on to the transom and has a hand wheel that allows me to adjust it up or down. I’ve currently got a big honkin Ray Marine 3d ducer on it. I’ve found these mounts for around $45 at Cabelas and Bass Pro.

There is likely going to be too much turbulence to read anything at high speed without a high speed transducer. And you definitely don’t want it hanging low in the water. I would mount it on the transom flush or just above the bottom of the hull to be able to use it at trolling speeds. And if you really need something for higher speeds get a high speed transducer and a Y cable (or whatever it is Lowrance may call it) to allow two transducers on one unit. It’s what most boats would need anyway if thats what you are looking to accomplish.

I built a pole-mount from an older mk trolling motor bracket. Can adjust depth of the ducer on the fly to make up for changes in passenger or gear load etc. I’ve got it dialed in so it sits about halfway in the water up on plane, with no rooster tail. In super shallow situations I can just tilt it out of the water completely and use my shoot-thru ducer (2d only).

My little 6hp can only get to 16mph so ymmv. This is with Lowrance tripleshot ducer.

Brilliant Tangler! My Hook2 7 triple shot went from a huge advancement in depth finder technology for me to what am I going to do with this now that I’ve made upgrades in my sonar game. I’ve got a 12’ Lund with a Minnkota and a no motor lake I’m wanting to become intimate with, as well as an old broken down trolling motor that can now be repurposed and give the Hook2 a pardon.

Interesting. He doesn’t mind throwing holes in the boat, but it would be my concern that with the transducer in such locations as pictured it takes away that side of SI? Doesn’t the ducer need to extend below the main motor mostly to get a clear shot of that side? Just tilting the motor won’t achieve clearance for that need.

Thanks for info so far, those both look like good solid brackets.

Yeah I don’t use the SI much, 5” unit so it’s not ideal. But for a boat like this it works. The pole in the photo is actually how I have it when I’m running on plane. When I come off plane and start to scan, I drop the ducer lower down so it shoots out under the outboard. If I left it that low when running on plane I’d get rooster tail.

You don’t need to be below the lower unit, but if you are close to the gearcase you can get a shadow or deadspot on your picture. The angle of the cone just needs to clear the gearcase. I have to imagine how far off to the side you try and read could make a difference as well when it comes to how far you need to move it. When I added the big Lowrance transducer to my 16′ I had to move the transducer further out compared to the old ducer location. I dropped the boat in and just moved the transducer around till the shadow from the lower unit was gone. At that point I knew exactly where to mount before drilling holes anywhere. This was an easy option for me since I live close to the landing. Fair warning the further out you move a transducer the worse it will read on plane. Mine never looses depth, but the picture basically does blank as soon as I get on plane.

Munchy, high speed and 14′ don’t go together for our boat.

I’m not saying high speed as in 50mph. But just being up on plane at 8mph would be considered high speed transducer territory.

And a 14ft with 20hp on it should get up on plane and scoot pretty easy.
