Best ways to keep holes from freezing up in a wheel house

That’s pretty much it. There is little to no snow to bank the house with. We have hauled up snow in the past, but trying to come up with other ways to pull it off. I have seen videos of the inner tube idea, but wonder how well it works. I run a single fan across the floor from the furnace area towards the majority of holes but when its really cold and there is no banking they freeze up.

What I’ve done to help is lower house 3/4 of the way – drill holes being careful to leave shavings in place when you punch through. Lower the house on top of the piles, insert hole sleeves, then pack slush that is in the hole around the inside of the sleeve.

Then drill extra holes outside for some shavings to “bank” a little more…

Thanks, we have been doing that way for years. Most of the time it works pretty good. Have not drilled extra holes outside for shavings though. Just really wondering if the inner tubes would work any better than that method.

I too use ice shavings and don’t block up my fish house. I also have the Hardkor insulated sleeve covers.

I don’t remember if we ever packed the inside of the holes, however I run 10 inch holes so not sure there would be much room if I recall.

Just looked at those, I have seen them before. How much better do those keep up than the plastic ones? I also never block the house.

Follow up question to I see they come in 3 sizes 4-10″ 7-15″ and 10-20″ They only have the 10-20″ in stock. Any idea what size you have, I would think the 7-15″ would be ideal.

On glare ice days it’s nice to line the perimeter of the wheel house with silt socks to keep the wind out.

That’s a solid idea, they would take up some space for sure but would work.

I had the their original ones and would fold them at the seam and put around my plastic sleeves. It was kind of a pain, but would work. When I visited them at the show in St. Paul, I picked up the ones intend for going around the sleeves. The material is pretty stiff and I didn’t like using them alone.

Erosion control mesh sock filled with wood chips. They come in various lengths and diameters. Great wind block when there’s not a lick of snow

It needs to be something that will stay in place against the frame, not to set it on. Don’t think I didn’t consider it lol

Fans a few feet above the floor at each hole to push the warm air down into the holes.

There’s a few companies that make insulated skirts for all the way around the wheelhouse. Not super cost effective but I’m sure it works well

Another option would be to use the ice defense to keep water circulating. I’ve seen guys buy cheap Amazon aerators instead and those keep holes open. Maybe Velcro them to hole sleeves?
