Best utility trailer size if you can only have one

I am finding myself overwhelmed trying to choose since there is any number of width and length combinations. The biggest question is on width. Normally, as with most things, I’d want to get the largest I could afford, but are there downsides to a 6 ft wide trailer vs 5 ft, etc? For those with multiple, do you find yourself preferring one over the others?

Bigger is better. But it all depends what you have or plan on using it for. I’ve gotten away with a 2 place snowmobile trailer for years. Hauled branches, riding mowers, snowmobiles, side x sides. But now we have a tractor and I’m wishing we had a skid steer trailer. So it really depends on what you plan on using it for.

As a guy who has twice bought trailers that are too narrow…go wide as possible. I have an open 5×10, 2′ high, steel sided trailer as well as a 6×12 V-nose tandem axle enclosed. There have been a million times I’ve beaten myself up over going too narrow. I’m a slow learner…

My 5×10 was good for pulling behind my atv and I hate the sob. Way too narrow and I constantly found it too small. Swapped for a 6×12 single axel. Great dual purpose. Most things I haul fit the 6 widths. The few times I haul 16’ boards, it works. One it’s legal on interstate to have 4’ out the end, and it works ok. If I didn’t have the need to pull behind atv, 6-6x 14 tandem all day long

    What ya haulin?
IMHO it’s difficult to find and “all around” trailer that would fit all your needs.

With that said, I get alot of mileage out of my flat bed 6 x 14.

I’ve bought quite a few trailers the past 10 years and my only recommendation is
    whatever you buy, buy aluminum.

Are you limited by storage? Sure, bigger is better in a lot of scenarios, but if you don’t have space to store it, it’s a moot issue.

I run a 8 x 12 and wish it was longer. But I can fit 2 wheelers and 2 portables nicely on it.

And I agree with epg. Buy all aluminum.

all depends on what your needs are, what do you expect to haul most of the time? 5’x8′ is the bare minimum as it fits a sheet of plywood, which is sort of the gold standard…

I’ve owned several Floe CargoMax trailers (8×5, 9.5×6) and have finally found my sweet spot size of 11’x6’….The extra width is nice for hauling things like mattresses flat as opposed to angle it in…

and as mentioned already, Aluminum is the only way to go, I prefer the Floe CargoMax as it’s all aluminum with a indestructible rotomolded bed… It’s crazy how expensive aluminum trailer have become since covid, I looked the other day and the trailer I bought 3 years ago has now DOUBLED in price!

This is what I bought about five years ago and does most anything I need. It is 77” wide and 12’ long. It is a Doolittle brand. We have 16 and 18 foot trailers also and rarely use them.

I can tell you Aluma has treated me well. I would highly recommend.

Aluma here as well. Just bought the 8112 model 81″ wide x 12 feet long. I’ve already used it more in 2 months than I have all my other trailers put together.

We have a Bear track 65″ wide x 10′ long and I think that’s about perfect. I generally side with the bigger is better crowd, but unless you have a specific need for something wider I think this size is a good all-around option.

I bought a 81″ by 14′ a few springs ago and it has worked great for everything I need it for.

    Aluma 7814 (6.5′ wide x 14′ long). 3500# axle (rated to ~2900#)

It works great for 16′ lumber, branches, logs, atv’s, mowers, a side by side, furniture moving, and so on. Not being a tandem axle it also is easy to shove around by hand or whatever if that’s a preference. This model kind of threads the needle between being capable of hauling a side by side comfortably and still being nimble enough to use around the yard.

I’d debate going down to the 12′ model or even the 12′ model that’s only 6′ wide if I was likely to tow it around with an atv or something mainly. Mine only ever goes on a truck though.

I have an 80″x14′ SA aluminum. It is a Hillsboro brand. It has an aluminum floor. Fits my Honda Pioneer and 3 man flipover perfect. I can roll it around on concrete with it loaded. Also some of the 12 foot models with flip up ramps won’t fit some of the 2 bench seat/6 passenger UTV’s.
This is my 3rd trailer. #1 was too small and #2 rusted away. As advised above buy aluminum if going to use it in the winter.

Hands down 5’x14’ or 6’x14, they have in between sizes also that would work great also. The weights between aluminum deck and wood are real close on the aluminum frame trailers also.

Right! I just looked at these exact trailers last week! And yep there pretty valuable…

6×12 does most things I need. Can borrow a 24′ anytime. 12″ sides are handy for mulch, dirt etc., carful with gravel easy to overload.

I would recommend jumping up to a size that has a 3500lb axle with a GVWR of 2990 so you can still get lifetime tabs if your in MN. I have an 81″×13′ Aluma that has been a good trailer. I went with 13′ over 12′ so I can run tracks on the sxs and still have some wiggle room.
Prices are 1.5 times what they were 2 years ago though.

I bought an 81″ x 14′ Aluma all aluminum trailer in Ramsey last spring. Can’t say enough good things about it. I think the price has gone up about 1k since the day I bought it.

In my best TFG voice…. You really need a triple axle double decker trailer made of titanium and of course a 550 diesel truck to pull it or you just screwing around and might as well use a wheel barrel.

    The “IDO Way”

Owning any utility trailer that isn’t a gooseneck guarantees that you wait in line for coffee at Caribou in a crossover SUV while wearing skinny jeans.

Has anyone ever went with a Toy Hauler(enclosed trailer) / Ice Castle type trailer.

If I was just going to get an enclose trailer I’m not sure I could justify the money. But if it was an Enclosed Trailer/Wheel house that really could be used year round…I’m in.
I’m guessing it would be a bit shorter than most Wheel Houses but I can sacrifice so I’m guessing a 16′ x 7′ wide would be about right?

Sorry, hope I didn’t hijack this thread too bad but it’s kinda the same question.
Is there another thread started on this topic I missed?

Agree with your logic here but im thinking the toy hauler fish house will cost double what an enclosed trailer will cost. If money is not a consideration then yes i would go with the toy hauler route

If you go to narrow and have sides on it you can have a problem getting out of your UTV. Depending on width and trailer side height you might have to crawl out the window of your UTV.
