I own a Pit Barrel Smoker and have loved everything about it. One of the best cooking smokers out there. However that’s for summer use and when I want to be outside with a drink and a cigar tending to it. For winter and “set it, forget it” smokes I have a Masterbuilt Elite Sportsman electric. Pretty cheap, gets flack from the “real smoker users” but there’s no denying it puts out quality tasting meat every time! I’ve been smoking all winter with mine for two years and it cooks in the same amount of time as my barrel smoker does in the summer. Digital controls and an internal temp probe as well which is a must if you go electric in my opinion.

i have an almost new masterbuilt electric you can have @fishthumperThanks for the offer. I may look you up if I get that way any time soon. That may be all I need to get started. I tend to get hooked on things rather easily so this may turn into a obsession once I get started. Next thing you know I’ll be ordering me something like Ice Caps unit.
You’re words may be true fishthumper! For me it started with a old Brinkman Smoke N’Pit that my kids bought me for fathers day! $49.99! the wife bought it because the kids were too small to even have jobs back then. I kept modifying it to get it to vent and draw smoke properly and made a coal basket for it for long burns. I smoked on that thing for the longest time. It was always a struggle to get it to hold proper temp. But man did I learn a lot from cooking on that thing!
I kept upgrading every couple years after that until I got the unit in the pic years back now. I had two trailer mounted stick burners at one time during the height of my BBQ catering. I sold the other unit a few years back.
It’s truly a hobby that can get a hold of you the same way fishing can!
March 30, 2020 at 5:51 pm #1929154I have an off set smoker that i built a charcoal basket for and it will run 7 hours at 225 on a single basket and dosen’t require more than a peek at the temp gauge every few hours. 1 basket equals about a half bag of charcoal. For longer cooks i use 2 baskets. I have seen that masterbuilt just came out with a charcoal gravity smoker digital controlled. Can be set up to run off a usb battery pack and supposed to last 8-12 hours on a bag of charcoal. Supposed to go from cold to 225 in 7 minutes and cold to 700 in 13 minutes. For $500 I am seriously thinking about getting one.

Ain’t that the truth. I don’t have a real fancy setup but love it so much. Once you start getting into making your own rubs, sauces, and injections and getting to the science of smoking meat it’s truly an obsession. I’ve been trying to get to know my local butcher because I have a crazy fantasy of wanting to carve my own cuts of meat!
