In the market for a vehicle in that price range. Leaning towards an F150 super crew cab or Jeep Grand Cherokee. Any pros or cons on a Ford with a 4.6 or 5.4? Or the 3.7 in the Jeeps?

The 5.4 is a good unit, just watch out for the years where the spark plugs broke off easy. Otherwise you should be fine. Mine was a 08 and it cost me $800 FOR 8 PLUGS because of a bad 2pc design.

Ouch! That seems really expensive! Was that for coils too or just plugs? I just got all of the plugs and coils replaced in my 08 5.4 and it was under $900.
March 15, 2017 at 2:31 pm #1681521I have a 2005 F150 super crew cab that I’m considering selling in that price range.
If your interested and want more info shoot me a pmMarch 15, 2017 at 2:50 pm #1681530Best used vehicle depends mainly on how it was maintained by the previous owner(s). I would not recommend a Jeep however. I would also clarify in your post what you are needing the vehicle for. Whats best for you would change if you wanted it to haul a horse trailer vs whether you just wanted something to get out on the ice once in a while…

March 15, 2017 at 3:06 pm #1681542Most everything in that price range will have a bunch of miles and will have had the spark plugs already replaced so that is a non issue. In that price range it is more about how well the vehicle has been taken care of so looking at it and test driving it will tell you a lot.
March 15, 2017 at 4:15 pm #1681568If you’re looking for longevity, I honestly think a Tahoe or a Silverado with a 5.3 Vortec in it would be best in that price range. I am a Ford guy, but those motors just keep ticking…As long as you don’t mind a little rust…
huskerduPosts: 592March 15, 2017 at 5:16 pm #1681582I agree with the rust issue in that price range, take a drive to Kansas
March 15, 2017 at 5:20 pm #1681584272,000 on my 05 Grand Cherokee, didn’t put a dime into it until 190,000. I would definitely buy another. Can’t speak for the V6, but the 4.7 has treated me well. Tranny is strong and the driveline is solid. They have been known for bad rear diffs, and I have had to replace the bearings twice since 200,000. Front diff mount bushings go bad.
Currently diagnosing random misfires and fear I may need to look inside the engine. Even with this many miles, it’s probably worth an engine swap.

+1
The 5.3 is also easy to work on.I wouldn’t consider a Ford 5.4 3 valve which is 04 or newer I believe. Not just the spark plugs were a bad design.
March 15, 2017 at 6:35 pm #1681603I have a 2002 Silverado with the 5.3. 165K miles. Keeps on ticking with very little money put into it. Fuel pump replaced, batteries, brakes, tires. That’s as much as I can remember. I expect it to go 200K miles. Which I sure hope as I am in no mood to drop 45K on a new truck anytime soon.

March 15, 2017 at 7:40 pm #1681609Thanks all. Not going to be pulling anything soon. We have an 08 5.7 grand Cherokee and my 01 GC is starting to get the 4.0 knock on its second motor at 312k. Time to retire it for good.

March 15, 2017 at 9:01 pm #1681619Not sure if it’ll hit that price range, but I had an early Toyota Sequoia (’01) till last July, and I loved it for many years! I still miss it sometimes.
