I am planning on getting a group of guys together to ice fish Mille Lac this winter.

More than likely be using Red Door Resort. We will be looking for walleye and perch. There will be a mix of hard core ice guys and novices.

Any recommendations as to best time?

Are you looking to use a sleeper or just portables?

even 2-4 years ago was pretty good, time will tell what we say about this coming season.

I think anytime is good….its what you make out of it! good food, treats, beers and good company!

If its nice out….head out with the portables and run around. If its cold, stay in and play cards or dice

    it all works!

Don’t be discouraged, there is still plenty of fish to be caught out there. I agree that the lake isn’t what it used to be, but there is plenty of encouraging signs for the future.

Mille Lacs typically is a dusk and dawn primetime lake but can be awesome all night.

Is it really that bad now? It has been quite a few years since I have been there. We are looking to hopefully be able to catch fish. Not much on drinking or playing cards

Might want to try Red lake…. she ain;t what she used to be. I agree with Bobber, it was about the last 3-4 winters that the decline started… hopefully we have hit bottom there.

IMO, yes, pretty bad…. Typically the first 2-3 weeks of the ice season is pretty good. Was up there this weekend and did not ice a single fish.

Talked to a few people who said they caught a few, but all were outside the keeper slot. Remember, the lake has a 2 fish limit. Keeper slot is 18 – 20 inches. Fishing for those 2 inches is…. tuff!

Next trip up I’m sticking to the bays and fishing perch and pike. I hear the Red Door has a couple spearing houses out. Might give that a try for a change of pace.

Call me optimistic but I’m actually expecting a decent year. Based on what I’m hearing from my friends back home they are catch anywhere from 4-10 fish in an evening whereas last year they were getting only 1-2. My favorite time to be out is early January as soon as there is enough ice to get out to the flats but hopefully before there is too much snow to really start cutting down on oxygen levels in the water. Your best bet would be to rent a sleeper or set up a wheelhouse for overnight fishing and then do some run and gun in deep water during the day. With the St Paul ice show coming up this weekend I won’t be able to make it up but I’m finally hoping to get up there in 2 weeks.

You beat me to it. I hate to take business away from those good folks at the mille lacs resorts but last two years I’ve taken two groups of twelve up there and the last two years we pretty much got skunked.

I was just thinking about where to take those guys this year and I’m going to try to get them to go to either SD or Red lake.
Them boys deserve some decent fishing for the money they’ve spent the last two years… None of them fish at much as I do so they were pretty disappointed with the annual ice outing.

Loved it up there 3yrs ago though. Pretty much spent my entire winter on mille
