Too be honest if casting crankbaits of any size the only reels that will stand up is baitcasters. Not only that but much easier on your wrists and hands that is my two cents.

Randy, you’ve got to be kidding me. There’s no comparison between Shimano and Quantum as a whole. I don’t even know where to begin. I’ve fished with a lot of different people and there’s VERY few old quantums out there. They just don’t last. I’m not saying that all Shimano reels are perfect, no one company is, but as a whole there is no comparison between Shimano and any other freshwater reel company. They design and manufacture their own product. Quantum doesn’t own any factories, they just send the plans to a plant in china that makes reels for many different brands, I believe Okuma is pumped out of the same factory. It’s very hard to believe the quality control is as good at a facility that pumps out reels for every Tom, Dick, and Harry vs. a factory that is directly owned by the company that designs the reels as Shimano is.

My stratics from back in the very early 2000s were pretty good. Wouldn’t be surprised if the guy I sold them to is still using them. All the Shimano I’ve owned since have been junk.

This is pretty subjective. Have you owned one Shimano or a hundred? They’ve been “junk.” Junk doesn’t tell me much of anything, other than it seems like you have a predetermined bias. Shimano has had issues, one of the bigger ones being a “binding” issue that was common in reels roughly 10 years ago. This was caused by a nickel main gear reacting to the grease when it got wet. Sometimes it was also caused by the friction ring swelling underneath the rotor in wet and humid conditions. When this issue became known the metal used for the gears was switched and so was the composition and design of the friction ring. Other than that Shimanos have been relatively bullet proof compared to other brands. Look at tacklewarehouse under top selling reels, I have never seen a Quantum there, but always many Shimanos. I know a lot of serious fishermen, and a few have quantums…because they got them for free or at a deep discount. When people have to go out and buy a reel with their hard earned money, it’s not a quantum, unless it’s a zebco 202.

You sound like someone who has a vested interest in Shimano.

I’ve had Curados, Stradics and Symetres. While I don’t doubt the quality of their reels, my opinion is that you can find just as good of quality in lower priced reels.

Your opinion about quality is a little far fetched though. I don’t know as much as you about their products but know that they changed the Curados to the series below and kept the price the same.

I’ll roll with Pflueger Presidents until they need replaced. (8 years so far on ice and open water for $49).

    ?????????

Not even close with any other fresh water reel manufacturer; could care less if they own their factory or not.

I’ve got nothing to do with Shimano, I just like their reels. I’ve tried other brands but keep coming back to Shimano. I would say over the last 20 years the Chinese and Koreans have been catching up with the Japanese, and most mid-priced reels made today are going to be very serviceable. One problem I have is that I’ve got around 40 reels in my arsenal and I won’t have a direct need to buy any more in the next 20 years. They last. And if you know how to do basic maintenance parts are easy to get. Don’t be such a h8er. And a nerd.

When you guide a lot…and have done so for several years.. it truly is a unique test ground…I am a devoted Rippin Rap guy on the Fox and Menominee Rivers, Green Bay, and Bays de Noc…I’ve fished em all… Randy put me on huge drag pullin Browns one day working blades and swimbaits near Milwaukee Harbor on 6# braid and a 10$ leader…trout up to 14 lbs. on an orange quantum 20 and an AVS 63 MXF ) He has a video of that 8 min battle somewhere )

Shimano and FinNor fell apart for me in one season…same issue with James Holst when he was guiding 200 days a season… Quantum and Pfleuger Patriarchs were pretty sweet… Lews, Team Lews Pro in a 2000 or 3000
have been gold for me going on 8 years ($129) retail…Cust Service is extraordinary… Piscifun Carbon X are very nice but they have a long journey from Beijing to the USA if you need repair/replace…
