Best rig for fishing for flathead with live baitfish

Thinking about using 80 lb braid with a palomar knot tied to a 2 oz disc sinker at the end then about 1 foot up a dropper loop with a j hook with a live shad, bullhead, or bluegill hooked around the spine.

Some folk were saying to use a slip sinker rig instead.

What method (of the 2 i mentioned or something else) would be best and why?

Can’t go wrong with 80lbs braid down to at least a 100-200lbs barrel swivel. At least a 4oz no roll sinker, larger depending on current and bait size. Then a mono leader of 50lbs tied with a Palomar knot to the swivel and Snell knot to a circle hook. Hook size depends on bait size, and size of fish your targeting. If not using a circle hook then a Palomar not would be sufficient. I would use a leader 8 to 12 inches long, and a bead or stopper between your sinker and swivel to protect the knot. I like the slip sinker rig because it allows the fish to take the bait and not feel that much tension on the line. Another good thing about this rig is if you get snagged you more then likely save the weight when you break off. I believe everyone on IDO would agree that the no roll sinker and short leader is the way to go, but people have their favorite hooks and knots that they prefer. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I try to not make it too complicated.

For a sucker or bullhead in the 8″ range I use the Team Catfish 8/0 Super J hooks. If Gama’s I’ll go with their 10/0. The two are the same size although the TC is heavier wire.

About 18 inches of 80 pound Nuclear Yellow line, never more then 18″. I make sure the swivels are a min of 90 pound test with a 4 oz sinker. In spring there might be a need for more weight but a person can get by with less most of the year. Since it’s a slip sinker it really doesn’t matter what size it is as long as it holds the bait where you want it.

Then 80 pound Team Catfish Tug O War braid for the rest of the line.

I don’t use lighter line for the leader as the cat will tell you what your weakest link is. But many fold do, some don’t use any leader at all.

The hook gets down sized as the bait size is dropped.

    Good Luck!

I agree with BK. He seems to know a thing or 2 bout flats.

I personally wouldn’t use less then 3oz weights. A good lively bait will move anything lighter even in clam waters.
    I like bank style sinkers

I keep it pretty simple reel spoiled with 80pp
    My go to rig
3-6oz bank sinkers attached to a sinker slider, #200swivels, 8-12″ leader of my main line then tied to a 10/0 gama octopus hook
Weights and hooks can vary depending on current and bait

Careful when fishing around clams! They’ll cut your line. )

Why a yellow leader instead of a clear mono/fluoro one? Even the green power pro seems like itd blend in better.

Would you put a bead anywhere?

So i ended up goin with the slip sinker rig without a leader. Tried a split shot to keep the slip sinker from going against the hook but that didnt work very well. Gonna try a rubber band next time.

Totally love the slip sinker rig along with a dual drag system reel. My buddy was using 2 rods while i was just using 1 and i caught more fish than him. Fish feels no weight when it bites

The best rig definitely includes either split shot or rubber bands

Bk is there a reason you use the yellow line for the leader? why never over 18″
