I have a feeling that Santa is going to get me a few I Fish Pro’s or Finicky Foolers for Christmas. Actually I hope one of each. Thinking about getting a few rods rigged to fish pike with on them. What mainline choice do you think will work best. I really want to go with some type of a superline ( Powerpro ) but I’ve never used it in the winter months and am not sure if it will absorb water and freeze on the spool. What do all of you use on your reel setup’s for pike fishing in freezing temps?

If I was fishing for pike and you wanted to run superline I really don’t think you can go wrong with PowerPro or Suffix 832 Ice.
I personally run the 832 and have stuck with it as I have had no issues. One I would stay away from is the new Berkley Carrier 8 stuff. It was horrible for me all summer and I refuse to even try it in the winter.

Not to derail the thread but what didn’t you like about it? I really liked it on my casting rods this summer.
If you will be fishing on cold days I would use mono. It will come off the spool much more freely when its cold. You will be fine the first time with the braid but after it gets full of water it might not come off the best. Just my thoughts. Jigging I am almost 100% braid but set lines still get mono for me.

For pike, bigger walleye, lakers, etc., I prefer the 832 over mono.

What pound do you use I have been running 8 lb 832 suffix and then use different leaders for pike and walleye. Do you use flurocarbon leader material or regular fluro on your pike leaders?

I like 30# Sufix then tie in a leader of a species appropriate fluorocarbon. I use both regular and “leader” fluorocarbon and I don’t think it matters. 8-10# seems about right when fishing walleye with small to medium sized livebait. I bump to #15 when fishing bigger suckers for walleye and if I’m soaking big deadbait for pike I use 80#.

I learned something new this last year. I always thought that Fluro mainline and Fluro leader material was the same. Not so. I had good luck preventing bite offs using mainline Fluro for leaders. But once i changed to Fluro leader material I had GREAT luck on cutting down on bite offs. I also Tie my own Large pike / Muskie leaders using 125-150 Lb. fluro leader material. I have not lost a fish on them yet due to bite or break offs

B-man taught me that last year on the ice, I always used mainline. Watched him catch like 10 or 15 on one leader and had to go over and ask what the h3ll are you using.
All my pike leaders are now leader materialDecember 13, 2020 at 9:11 pm #1997007I think that I have that seaguar fluro leader in the 25 pound test will that be sufficient for pike leaders. I don’t tie the two way leader just a leader to straight treble hook for shiners. Do you think 25 lb is sufficient.
