I am going to be going up to the crosslake area this fall (hopefully all this stuff is gone by then) and am looking for a lake with good a good lake trout population. I know there aren’t many lakes up there that have population of them but I know Big Trout does and Roosevelt does too. Does anyone know how good the populations are on those lakes?

Have you looked at the mine pits around Crosby/Ironton. They are stocked with different verities of Trout.

They all have accesses, but not all of them have boat ramps. I have fished them a few times over the years. The shore line side imaging views are amazing.

    fish on ….

    Rabbit in Crosby.
I’m on Roosie and the locals say they were pretty much fished out. They no longer stock them as they didn’t have a very successful reproduction rate.

According to DNR’s Lakefinder, there aren’t any lakers in Rabbit. I do know that there are some in a small pit near Rabbit, and I believe they started stocking some in Pennington and Sagamore Pits too last year.

I’ll have to check out some of the mine pits any suggestions for baits or depths to fish?

Our fishing club fishes Roosevelt every year, usually in mid June. I can’t believe, on a calm nice night, all the baitfish surfacing right down the middle in 100+ FOW. A couple years ago a guy caught a 45in musky trolling. It’s usually feast or famine for us. No shortage of rock bass in the shallows.

I’ve fished Rabbit for Pike, but can’t help with Lake Trout.

I’ve never fished for lakers in open water so I don’t have any personal suggestions. Oars N Mine bait shop on just on the north side of Crosby might know more.

Just as a comment. All of the the DNR specified Trout Lakes have very strict live bait requirements. I believe they do not allow minnows of any kind. All the mine pit lakes are DNR specified trout lakes. So, check before you go out.

I typically fish them with crawlers and plastics.

As for Rabbit, the east lobe has a 300 ft mine pit hole on one side. Very interesting sonar patterns.

Another comment, I have fished Big Trout many times, both open and hard water, and I have never caught a Lake Trout…. There are huge clouds of bait fish, and the big fish are never hungry.
