Been using G Loomis IMX SJR 721 and 720 for 20 years. They might not be under $200 now
Look at limit creek…they have a couple options. I’d go with a smoothie for 1/4 and bigger. The 5’10” options are also very good. I use them both a lot and the smoothie is great for pitching too.
GLoomis Walleye GLX 6’3 mag light Xf is the best bet but it’s double your price.
Problem is there are a lot of rods around $100-$125 and then you jump into the $300+ range. I’d get two from limit creek and you’ll spend your $200. Warranty and service is top notch, too.
Vertical 6’3″ medium Croix Tournament series
Pitching 6’10” medium light Croix Legend series
As a general all-purpose river rod you’d be hard pressed to find something better than the Limit Creek Smoothie Matt mentioned. I’m a big fan of Elliott rods as well. I’ve never been a huge St. Croix fan myself but I recently purchased a mojo yak rod that I’m really impressed with.
Take all the recommendations you can to get an idea but everyones feel and preference is a little different. Once April rolls around I’d swing into a scheels/joes/reeds and get your hands on every fishing rod in the store. One will just feel right and it’ll probably be a rod you didnt expect. Thats how I ended up with the mojo yak and Elliott I previously mentioned. For whatever reason they both felt better than any G loomis rod did. Bought those two for about the same price as a cheaper g loomis too.
I’ve been running a sixgill lykan series rod i love for both vertical and pitching. Otherise I rum gloomis imx, e6x, or at croix avid x
It’s not my intent to make your decision harder I really want to try to simplify it for you. Went fishing the river there’s just so many factors that come into play. What type of wine what are you pitching you fishing blades plastics hair not list goes on and on. Then add in the river conditions. You could be fishing 15 20,000 ft.³ of water in the upper part of the river Or facing 100,000 ft.³ of water down in the lower pools. My advice to you is to try to fish with as many people as you can and just ask him if you can pick up their rod and fish with it for a little while you’re going to start finding little details to the rods that are significant improvements over that Saint Croix. I’ve fished with the majority of the rods listed above and most of them are very good quality rods. However a lot comes down to personal preference and how it feels in your hand
Any custom builders in your area? May be worth a conversation with them about what you are looking for. If you can find someone that does it as a side gig or hobby they may be able to set you up for cheaper than what you would expect.
I have been buying a few rods here and there built on Rainshadow blanks and have been very happy with them.
