I’m about to buy new inline reels for my new icerod-builds. Which ones should I have a look at? They need to be free falling/spooling since I fish quite deep, and they need to be able to handle quite big fish ) I have been looking at 13 fishing freewill and Frabill 371, are there better options out there?

I like the 6061 Black Betty better than the free fall. I don’t like the trigger on the free fall. But each their own.

Most inline reels for ice fishing are not for
    ‘quite big fish’

Check out mooching reels if the ice fishing market doesn’t have what your looking for.

Good sized Walleye, trouts etc should not be a match for any inline reel. But I prefer smooth reels with a good drag and a reel I can depend on no Mather what when I’m on the ice.

I have the 13 Fishing ghost free fall. The biggest issue I had was having braid on it while fishing out in the cold, it would ice up the line and not feed smoothly if at all. Once I switched to flouro I had no problems. It handled a 7lb northern like a champ but haven’t caught anything bigger than that on it yet.

I like inline reels for shallow panfish, BUT they are NOT for “quite deep” and “quite big fish.” You’ll be much better off with spinning reels for a smoother drag, and if line twist is a concern add a small swivel to your line.

To be honest I have a hard time believing you really need a drag for panfish. When you fish shallow you don’t really need free spooling either. I have fished Frabill black ops 26″ in 30 feet deep water for char that run and take line, that reel don’t even have a drag ) So I’m quite confident a inline reel will handle up to 30 feet depth and stronger fish like char, trout and walleye.

I hate spinning reels to be honest, I use baitcasters, that’s why I will try inline reels for ice fishing. We’ll see how that turns out ) Right now I’m thinking the black Betty 6061 seems interesting.

Why not just run a baitcaster then for the depths and size of fish you’re targeting. I can’t imagine an inline performing well in that application but diff’rent strokes I guess and if it works for you best of luck finding a reel you like

I also agree w 6061 Black Betty. This reel is a blast to fish with. Vey light and matches up nice w a lite action rod.

If one wants to spend money and get the version with the drag.

I’d go hand over hand before I use another inline reel.
