Best Icefishing Line for Walleyes/Northern Pike and Panfish

So, I guess I’m asking for 2 lines for icefishing.

What is the best icefishing line for panfish?

What is the best icefishing line for walleyes/northern pike?

I know that I probably want an abrasion resistant line for the walleyes and northern and I thought someone on here said that Seaguar IceX was a great line.

Would Seaguar IceX be good for both the walleyes/northern and panfish rods?

I use 4 lb mono for panfish, 6-8 lb mono for eyes. I’ve used suffix ice magic or trilene’s ice stuff for mono, but don’t really think it’s that important. Regular old trilene xL should be fine for most applications. I very occasionally use 6-8 lb braid for walleyes on one of my rigs. Braid will freeze up constantly if it’s cold/windy and you’re outside. So if u expect to do a mix of indoor and outdoor go with mono to be safe

Best for pound per diameter in mono/copolymer line is gonna be Stroft GTM line. However it’s gonna be online ordered.

    Stroft GTM 5X 5.28# test .15 mm line break 5# 10 oz.
    Stroft GTM 4X 7.9# test .18 mm knot break 7# 2 oz.
    Stroft GTM 3X 9# test .20 mm knot break 9# 6 oz.
    Stroft GTM 2X 11.2# test .22 mm line break 10# 4 oz.
    Stroft ABR 2X 11.2# test .22 mm knot break 10# 2 oz.

For readily available is P-line Floroclear that I use.

Pline Floroclear .16 mm 3# line break 4# 1 oz.
Pline Floroclear .18 mm 4# line break 5# 14 oz.
Pline Floroclear .23 mm 6# line break 8# 11 oz.
Pline Floroclear .25 mm 8# line break 10# 9 oz.

I like fishing with braids too, but that icing up is a no no for outside most of the time.

I should have stated in the OP that this will most likely be 98% in an iceshack and only outside for the early season when it’s warmer.

I was thinking of the Seaguar because of it’s lack of stretch.

If you are inside that much, I’d use braid (I like Suffix 832) and a mono or flouro leader. I use 6-8 lbs braid and 8-10 lbs leaders.

yep! If its so cold my eyelets keep freezing and I can’t feel bites, I fish in a shack. i don’t run and gun like the kids like to call it unless its nice out towards late ice….why suffer if you don’t have to?
i like 3LB Lindy ice line for pannies. i like any good braid with a flouro leader for toothy fishes. use a modified alberto knot for the leader so your line slides through the eyelets.

One thing I’ll say is don’t get too tied up(pun intended) in specifications and types of line. People like to over complicate types of line(especially ice) and it can get confusing. I’ve been guilty of it too.

A good monofilament is hard to beat for all-around line, IMHO. I do like braid on a lot of my open water setups though, with or without a leader.

I would, however, be interested in hearing other peoples’ arguments otherwise, and maybe what the outstanding benefits are to braid over mono. Lack of stretch I’m sure has its advantages.

No stretch is nice esp in deeper water, no memory, super durable, super sensitive to light bites, and it lasts for years.

Absolutely yes. I know the fluorocarbon coated Pline Floroclear lasts a very long time. Years and I still use the it. The Stroft GTM, I’ve only had it for about three or four years on. I will say that I have no problem doing a topshot or super long leader length of Stroft GTM on braid. I use a variety of lines from different makes. I’m more attentive to the actual line diameter and tensile strength. As it seems that sometimes one line at a certain diameter is perfect for what I’m looking for, but in another line diameter it is not what I want.

I used the Seagur IceX last year for the first time and really liked it. I have it in 2lb and 4lb. Low memory, good strength.

And the abrasion resistant is good too, right?

Like for toothy fish like walleye and northern?

All very good points! For a long time I kind of chose to “forget” about mono, but now have been rediscovering it’s benefits as an old stand-by. Thanks for the input.

For stamped metal spoons like slender spoons, tingler etc. I’ve went from 8 to 6 to 5 and 4lb mono with fluorocarbon leader. 8 was like fishing with rope.

Noticed a big difference in action of these type of spoons the thinner diameter you go.

YEs, the Seagur Ice X has been very abrasion resistant for me. I fish walleye, pike, perch. I had two rods with this line last year and will run 4-5 with it this year.

    Cool!

I thought there was a thread on this line specifically on here but couldn’t find it.

    Did yo see it?
