I’ll take a stab at this one.

I feel that the Bull Whip is the best noodle rod on the market. It has a slightly heavier backbone for powerful hook sets and the tip is just slightly heavier than a standard noodle. The advantage is the control I have while fishing tungsten almost exclusively, without losing any of the characteristics of a noodle rod. You wont be disappointed.

The Quick Tip is more of a sensitive-feel type rod (carbon) where as the noodle rods (glass) are more of a visual type. The Quick Tip will fish all of the small jigs that a noodle will, but can also handle spoons and #4 Rippin Raps.

In summary, if you fish extremely light biting panfish (gills and crappies) the Bullwhip is your rod. If you fish those same fish plus perch and the occasional eater walleye, the QT is a great choice as well.

    Just remember: Noodles-visual, QT-feel.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Bruce –

I’ll follow up Andy’s comments in saying that he’s right, the noodle is a visual bite-detection rod with the QT being more of a “feel” rod. Both Thorne and TUCR give you the opportunity to end up with a really high quality piece of equipment, but it really comes down to matching the way you fish to what you really want. That tends to be the toughest part. What guides do I get? What length do I fish with? Colors? Are you kidding me? )

In previous years, I’ve been a proponent of chopping off a 1 -2″ section (1 3/4″ to be exact) of the existing TUCR noodle rod to achieve a few goals. The first is to “stand-up,” literally to heavier tungsten jigs that can overload the rod. The other, is to keep the tip from wavering in the wind so much when fishing outside. To this day, I favor a shorter TUCR noodle rod as I can better use my body to shield the wind and prevent it from losing bites in the wind-driven “noise.”

I’ll be the first to say that the Bullwhip does that without having to tinker at all. If you’re going to be fishing outside, I’d order a 24 or 28″ Bullwhip, pick out your handle style (I like split grip), stay with the recoil guides, and go with it!

Joel nailed it perfectly. The term noodle generally refers to being a super slow action and the curve would extend from the tip down through the handle. The blank material (graphite, glass, carbon, …) will have a greater impact on the sensitivity (visual Vs feel) With the advancement of guys tweaking the blanks, both in carbon and glass, some very unique Hy-brid actions are now available.

If you can take advantage of getting out on the ice with someone that has any of these rods, do it. By far the most achieved in the world of custom rod building is producing a product that suits your needs exactly. Even if you use them and don’t find exactly what you want, either shop can build something to fulfill your needs.

IMO theres no such thing as a best rod. As each rod have their own application, depending on jig,and lines use. Just buy them all. In my case I build them all…

30″ should be the total length.

Are the recoil guides the best for anti-icing?

All guides will ice its the diameter that will make it easy to flick the ice off
