what’s the best heater for a otter cottage? my buddy cooker gets it way to hot.
I have the lodge insulated an anything above 10 deg Low is to high. Plan to get one of the little round ones.
I use a big buddy but thats just what I have. It gets too hot and I need to turn it off every 10 minutes. A regular buddy or one of those smaller ones would probably do fine.
I should specify I have a 1200 cottage
Portable buddy, if low is to warm a guy can open all vents and unzip door, or just run the pilot for a while. I’d say if that’s still too warm, your at the point of not needing a heater.
The portable buddy on low is basically the same as the round little buddy. 4,000 vs 3,800 BTU, But you have the option to crank it up to 9,000 and also connect to a bulk tank. Portable buddy with 11 lbs tank is ideal setup IMO.
The Little Buddy is perfect most of the time.
Not “The Buddy,” not the “Big Buddy. The round Little Buddy.
Do yourself a huge favor and disconnect the tip-over switch if you’re having problems lighting it. I fought it for years, but now it’s an awesome little heater.
I use the Portable Buddy but my gal requires a lot of heat or she don’t go.
Maybe I should leave the heater home!

I went this route as well.
Find one of these beauties on Craigslist or a garage sale. 3k BTU and wind or vibration doesn’t blow them out. You can walk to new holes and it’s still running when you get there.
Is that Coleman propane?
Yes sir. I think it’s called the procat or powercat or some sort of feline name like that. I’ve stockpiled 4 of them since they stopped making them. They made a smaller one as well but it puts out very little BTUs… barely enough to even warm your hands.
Insulated or un-insulated?
Neither was stated but it will make a difference.
You may not be happy with the catalytic models if you have an uninsulated house but should work fine if insulated.

Very true… it only puts out juice comparable to the Little Buddy, but it won’t get blown out by a fart.
Forgot to mention that a Camp Chef Stryker “Jet-Boil” type stove works awesome too on a one pound propane tank.
It’s a clean blue flame and super adjustable (but still give yourself a little ventilation to be safe)
It’s especially nice on those warmer days when every other heater is still too hot.
How much are you guys buying these for? EBay prices seem high to me.

I have a Hideout and a Lodge. I use the Hunting Buddy for both. A little too warm for the Hideout, but might be the perfect size for a Cottage. I like the electric ignition on it and I’ve used mine for 4-5 years now with no issues.

They were decent, and discontinued. They go for stupid prices, the ProCat sold new for around 50.00 back in the days.It would run a long time on one bottle(1lb).It would keep a Otter non-insulated cabin decent in most conditions.
This might be worth looking at.
It’s basically a new version of the ProCat.
No personal experience, but I think it would be great in a Cottage on all but the coldest of days.
I love my Little Buddy, but it can be a little too much on warmer days and I waste heat with the vents open and door cracked.
I would watch reviews on u-tube to help make a decision… I have a big buddy heater,it has low, medium,hi heat. I tend to like more heat. Dont disconnect the tip over switch it could save your life..
Yup, a little buddy works great. I have it mounted to a 5lb tank. Lasts forever….or 5x longer than a 1lb…

I’ve picked them up for $20-$30 at garage sales, c-list, or f-book marketplace over the years. The ones on Ebay are being resold to make money. I remember my dad buying a new one from Gander Mtn 15 to 20 years ago and I think it was $90… I remember it being about the same price as the regular buddy heater.
The coleman catalytics definitely aren’t for everyone. They produce more noise and stink than a buddy heater but less heat. The big feature to them is they don’t blow out from wind or vibration. The little buddy is better if you’re sitting stationary for awhile, BUT the buddy heaters drive me nuts when moving around. The catalytic is really the perfect heater for a hole hopping 1 man shack.
Little Buddy – used it yesterday o Chequamegon bay in my Cottage.
Interesting, I was given one of those Coleman Power Cat’s for Christmas a long time ago. I used it a couple times, but didn’t seem to like it for some reason. I use a dual sunflower on a 20LB tank, in my Fatfish 6120. I may have to dig the Coleman out of storage, knock the dust off if it, and try it again.

That coleman certainly will not throw out the heat your sunflower does, but it would work for a smaller shack fine if its a thermal.
My vote for a Little Buddy or regular Buddy I have a Pro Xover Cottage. Also you can turn the Buddy heater to half way from off to low also.
when I fished out of an Otter Cottage I only ever used a Coleman Northstar lantern, it seemed to keep me warm enough…
